people always say that numbers dont lie, but as someone who loves stats, I assure you, numbers lie their arse off, especially in college football.

yes, LSU was number 3 in the nation in Passing Yards Allowed, but we only played 3 teams that threw the ball; Kentucky, Ole Miss, and TAM. I like our secondary a lot, but thats not exactly a murderers row. and that rank includes Wisconsin, ULM, SHS, and NMS.

remove the OOC games, and LSU was actually 26th in Passing Defense

the defense was ranked 11th overall. remove the OOC games and it was 27th in Total Defense

LSU gave up 316 yards per game, 348 in conference

318 yards to Wisconsin
206 yards to Sam Houston
93 yards to ULM
570 yards to Miss State
274 yards to New Mexico State
566 yards to Auburn
306 yards to Florida
217 yards vs Kentucky
313 yards to Ole Miss
315 yards to bama
264 yards vs Arkansas
228 yards to TAM
449 yards to ND

our other SEC rankings when you remove the OOC teams

(EDIT: i thought the links were pretty clear but just to be extra pretty clear, these rankings are all SEC vs SEC, its not a list called "LSU without their OOC games vs the rest of the SEC with their OOC games", because I have no idea where the hell I would even find that list)

3rd in Scoring Defense - 20.8 ppg

3rd in Total Defense - 347 ypg

7th in Rush Defense - 152 ypg

3rd in Pass Defense - 195.4 ypg

11th in Interceptions Per Game - .50 pg

4th in Fumbles Forced Per Game - .88 pg

12th in Sacks Per Game - 1.38 pg

8th in Tackles For Loss Per Game - 5.5 pg

4th in Opponent 3rd Down Conversion - 37.5 percent

6th in Opponent 4th Down Conversions - 50.0 percent

6th in Opponent Red Zone Conversion - 82.6 percent

4th in Opponent Long Rushing Plays - 10+ yards - 37

8th in Opponent Long Rushing Plays - 20+ yards - 12

10th in Opponent Long Rushing Plays - 30+ yards - 6

8th in Opponent Long Rushing Plays - 40+ yards - 3

10th in Opponent Long Rushing Plays - 50+ yards - 2

and a few national rankings with the OOC teams removed

19th in Scoring Defense

48th in Rush Defense

26th in Pass Defense

103rd in Sacks Per Game

76th in Tackles For Loss

104th in Interceptions Per Game

51st in Fumbles Forced Per Game

60th in Fumbles Recovered

39th in Opponent 3rd Down Conversions

59th in Opponent 4th Down Conversions

59th in Opponent Red Zone Conversion

still think chief cant be replaced?

Yikes, I knew our pass rush was pretty nonexistent this year but this is terrible.

no-one says chief can't be replaced.

but this was a young team and that is part of the reason we were like this.

Thank you for not including the OOC stats, which skew our numbers and give a not entirely accurate picture of the situation.

Yeah I'm not worried anymore like I was 2 nights ago. We can be much better.

This has been a serious problem for 2 years now.

youre right, absolutely, like I said, numbers alone dont paint a full picture, they can make things look better or worse. thats why i posted so many, to at least try and get a feel for how the defense played.

and on the flip side of the "we were young" argument, I would say that I really don't think we played any offensive powerhouses this year, so the two should have balanced out a little.

I always thought John Chavis was overrated. I live in Nashville and the UT fans believe that had Fulmer fired Chavis he himself would not have gotten canned. Chavis was awful on third down and in last two minutes just like LSU.

The reason Chavis had success is because of the talent that LSU recruited for him. Not going to be that way at aTm.

What surprises me most is what an arse Chavis has been the last few days and also comments from players. It was time for him to move on.

Stats isn't everything. There was a clear difference on defense between game 1 and game 12. I think the bowl game was a fluke.

but what ever Chavis is gone it's 2015. Let's get a new DC and focus on recruiting.

You can't compare our SEC only stats with other teams' full stats. You're completing skewing the comparison against us.

2 things for chavis

1We never had a pass rush since hes been here outside of two years because we had a 5'9" cb who had the best football instincts Ive ever seen rushing the passer on simple CB blitzes.

2 His specialty is supposed to be linebackers but he let our defense suffer with Welter in there. When (by rumor Miles mandated) Beckwith came in we were instantly better. Theres something troubling about that.

Seems like Chavis turned into grumpy old defense man

He got embarrassed against Auburn, the team was woefully unprepared

It was time for him to move on

Nice job on the stats

If you remove our stats versus non conference opponents to compare us to other teams, you must do the same for every other team... Otherwise you have a ridiculous data set.

Keep in mind when viewing these stats that we were also 5th nationally in TOP.

After Auburn, our offense did everything it could to shorten games and keep our D on the bench.

Agreed. It's amazing the lengths many will go to make themselves feel better. The bottom line is Chavis is a wonderful DC and we lost him. Just call a spade a spade.

Actually, Bama and State are in the top 25 for passing offense. Bama is ranked higher in passing than they are in rushing (which is shocking...Cooper). State is 24th in passing and rushing. So you can throw them in there.

Did you remove the OOC games from EVERY OTHER team and recompute? Or just LSU?
Because if you didn't, your stats are lying too.

Edit: I saw your comment above. You need to make your methods clear in the OP.

Really, because I see Bama threw for 3,653 and MSU was within 5 yards of that. Saban did what most forward looking head coaches would do, that's called understanding what is going on in your conference and planning/implementing to remain elite, even with a 1st time starter at QB. But keep on with whatever your agenda is vs Chavis as he was the best thing going for LSU in 2014. And, no, I am not a Chavis pumper.

As I expected. Every game that really mattered, we leaked yards.
