He could have.

But if he'd lowballed O and O ended up sucking and getting fired anyway, he'd have been held accountable for that too.

Better to just make it more difficult to fire the guy.

You have to remember, we're talking about sleazy yet incompetent people here.

I'm just hoping for baby steps. Firing alleva is non negotiable. That has to been done. No exceptions.

Can we stop calling it a buyout and just say it was primarily a guaranteed contract? It totally makes it sound completely different.

In the NFL they always sign contracts with a percentage guaranteed. In the NBA the contracts are almost always 100% guaranteed.

The contract does not include a buyout. Wade, 34, would owe the school his remaining salary if he were to leave for another job, and the school would owe him the entire amount if he were to be fired.

We need the banned Greek community to go hard on king. The rant needs to let PJs know as long as Steve is in control no one wants their coffee

But it doesn't protect Joe. If it went south he was never hiring the next coach.

It makes Amoeba more vulnerable, not less.

Give O a zero buyout and he can say "we didn't get the guys on our A list and he went 5-2 as interim, so it was fair to give him a chance". Not a great defense but minimal harm done.

Give O a $12 million guarantee and he looks like a complete idiot. And now when someone needs to be sacrificed to the pitchfork-wielding mob, it's a lot cheaper for it to be Amoeba than Zero.

The next AD has to be in place before O is even fired. Ed's buyout offers Joe zero protection.

Well, I don't see any other logical explanation.

Generally speaking, in situations like this where it's a choice between deliberate malfeasance and incompetence, I usually lean towards incompetence. It's the optimist in me.

This time I don't. Call me jaded, but something stinks about this whole thing.

I think other things to consider about this situation are what if Aranda was expected to take the HC job after 3 years. Maybe Orgeron says give me 3-4 years and I will retire. I will maintain continuity while Aranda is groomed for the position as far as solidifying a recruiting base and program as the HC in the region.

Now I am fine if they move on now from Orgeron, but in that context the atypical arrangment may make sense.

PJ's is like the Pepsi of Coffee. Only way Ballard can get people to drink that coffee is signing an exclusive contract with La'Auberge Casino in Lake Charles and BR giving people no choice if they want coffee. Tastes bad.

Said on radio...Detillier stated Orgeron did not care what his salary was but he wanted a significant buyout due to lessons he learned at USC. Detillier also implied that Orgeron worked over Alleva in the contract negotiations.

Sounds like O knew he couldn't hack it and wanted to make sure he was paid.

I truly think what happened is they would have just gave the job to Aranda; however, he had no name recognition or familiarity with the region in recruiting.

This is basically all Orgeron is doing outside of managing the face of the program.

Yes Alleva royally fricked that. He literally had to offer Orgeron nothing. Orgeron was bluffing and wasn't going to walk.

Right, because me texting with friends had a huge impact on Alleva not interviewing anyone except Orgeron and have ANY other options for HC.
