I'm guessing something like: "Hey... you feel like playing us anymore" ... "No, not really." ... "alright"

No it was more like:

LSU AD: "Hey we want to play a football game against a school that still plays football"

Tulane AD : "Well, that counts us out"

LSU AD: "Yeah...hey...UNO has a football team you guys can schedule"

Tulane AD: "Yeah, that was our plan...I hear Pan Am Stadium is very nice now"

LSU AD: " "

This is really a pretty sad development and I think some of it has to do with the decline of New Orleans as a city, both pre-Katrina and post-Katrina.

Tulane's student body has always come primarily from outside Louisiana and much of it from outside the South, but there still seemed to be some identification of New Orleanians with the school and the sports programs

I think you're reaching here in trying to connect Tulane's lack of fan base to any decline in the city. Tulane fans have been few and far between really since the early 80's. I grew up Uptown just blocks from Tulane and it's been years and years since they've had any real support from the locals.

It's true that back in the 60's and 70's the city was pretty well split allegiance wise between LSU and Tulane, but that changed when Tulane's student body became so completely made up of northeasterners and floridians.

The Times Picayune actually had an interesting story on this a few years back. It explained the change in Tulane's approach to admissions and why they did it.

i wish the green wave was still on schedule...
playing in the dome in new orleans has been good for lsu ....i guess because although we won
there was some crazy games over the years...i can remember being in new orleans in the early
90's ..dome was packed ..i believe sammy martin
scored in last seconds for win...playing teams
in lower division doesn't sound that great

Good. frick Tulane. Let them go elsewhere for their corporate welfare check.
We shop drop USL too after we mount them yet again on Saturday. At least they are a state school. The only in-state school worth playing is Tech.

Tulane board's reaction:

Pretty much what I expected. I'm glad we are done with them. I did not like the deal with them and glad it has been cancelled.

For about half a second I felt for their fans, but I got over it in a hurry. It is sad how few people attend their games and how they don't even make the trip to Baton Rouge to see the game. I do remember as a kid when this was still a strong rivalry and how it was when I was at LSU.

I see them just dismantling the football program.

This should probably happen shortly.

would be interesting if they did because it would jeopardize their CUSA status

there is another major re-alignment coming and I expect to see UCF join the Big East, Tulane drop football and LA-Tech and ULaLa move up to CUSA

Tulane won't have a football program 6 years from now, IMO.

Tulane's support is just awful. I feel for their fans (as few as there are) that do support them.Tulane means as much to them as LSU does us. I was at the 2006 game at TS and they "may" have had 1,000 people.

My perception is that Tulane has shifted its focus from being a Louisiana-based school to being focused on the Northeast for its students. So a lot of students are not particularly interested in college football, and as alums they are certainly not going to travel from other parts of the country to attend games, and there are fewer New Orleans and regional alums percentage-wise to make up the critical mass necessary for a strong fan base.

My perception may be based more on the law school's make-up than the undergrad, but if you don't have a lot of alums within close proximity, you aren't going to get a crowd. Miami stuggles with attendance (obviously not as badly), but I suspect partly for the same reasons. Miami alums aren't necessarily in the Miami area and are unlikely to travel long distances reguarly for home games. Non alums in Miami, and likely in New Orleans, are not going to be strong supporters and attendees at college games.

I'm sure the Lake Charles folks are going to be excited about this. They'll bring more fans than you might think.

Hell, they pretty much out-manned UL-L at Cajun Field a couple years back, didn't they?

I don't think anyone is surprised it happened. To be honest I don't think Tulane fans really care. It was only a rivalry when the two schools actually had students from in state. LSU is %90+ in state and Tulane is probably <10% in state.

For the people wondering why there was noone in the stands for the BYU game. If you had been there for the Tulsa beatdown, you can understand why noone came back for the second game. You have to love the reasoning given though. Whoever is responsible for PR at LSU is one hell of a liar. I'll take a billion dollar endowment over a multi million dollar athletic program anyday.

the general public would support tulane if they had a winner. i mean they win in baseball and they get pretty good attendance by those standards

maybe they lost out forever when new orleans got the saints. before that tulane was the biggest game in town, and baton rouge seemed further away.

also when the city was bigger, they could more easily root for tulane. now that most of the old tulane fanbase moved out to metairie and wherever, they're the LSU "wal-mart" fans

of course they'll blame it on the BCS...

Better students. They're taking the best students they can get regardless of where they're from. I guess that means focusing on the NE, although that is somewhat of a fallacy. They draw students from all over. I believe the entering freshmen class this year had students from 49 states, only missing Vermont.

tulane puts about 100 people in the superdome on game day. They suck. Mcneese will beat the crap out of them.

McNeese is a better team than Tulane

..I don't see the point of playing NWST though. We're mediocre even for a I-AA team. I guess it's the Bradley Dale invitational

This would have been awesome if we replaced Tulane with someone good. McNeese State is not what I have in mind when I think about our Tigers playing someone better than Tulane. I am not saying Mcneese isn't better, but seriously, how much better. Its like replacing an old fat wife with an ugly one thats younger.
