You're right. Years of free access to more LSU football than most can ever dream of, but hey, all band kids are geeks.

What does free access to sporting events have to do with being a geek or not?

And surely not all the kids in the band are geeks...just the ones in this thread

It's the fact that we are just as interested in what's going on in the game as we are in performing for you people. If you knew anything about what you were talking about, then you'd feel differently.

Again, being interested in the game has nothing to do with you being a geek or not. The geeks are the ones who have carried on for 5 pages about former band directors, and "rites of passage", and making "cut" shirts for freshmen, etc.

All of the above = geeks

I hadn't necessarily included you in that group

but i know people who regretted doing it

Only a person would ever regret being a GBFTL member.

Nothing like it and the experience can't really be described unless you've actually done it. It's got to be even better now, with the trips to S.E.C. campus's and the yearly Bowl games. All we got back in my day was a trip to Jackson for OM/State and B-Ham for Bama. No trips to S.E.C. schools and no traveling pep band either.

The only problem I have now is having to go back and just sit in the stands. That's a tough thing for me, even today some 27 years after I graduated. Kind of reminds me of what John Ed Bradley talked about in his book about having a hard time going back into Tiger Stadium and just sitting there in the stands. Hard to do once you've been down on the field, especially if you loved LSU and were REALLY into what you were doing........

Woodwinds are just about worthless in a marching band......

Lets see most of us quit playing sports in college/or shortly after college.

Band "geeks" join a band in college and after college. then they develop groupies.... and become hot, etc just cause they play instrument.

Kinda wish I had learned how to play a guitar than throw a slider.

exactly, easiest instrument to make TGBFTL

My audition in Spring 1990 was the Tuesday after my HS Band (Comeaux HS in Lafayette) got back from the National Adjudicators Competition on Sunday. We were supposed to play the music from the Louisiana All State audition for Wickes. I had not looked at the audition music in a month, so needless to say I was awful. Wickes had done a guest conductor gig at my HS a few weeks before and that day he talked to me about trying out at LSU. So in his office he was listening to my awful audition and he goes "what is going on here? this is terrible." So I replied "we just got back from the National Adjudicators two days ago and I have been working so hard on preparing for that I have not spent any time getting ready for this audition and I am terribly sorry." Wickes goes "lucky for you I heard you play before today, otherwise you would be the first french horn I ever cut from Tiger Band." And then he started laughing.

I got out to "Hell Week" in August and it was a joke compared to what we had to do in HS. By the first game week I was a mellophone group leader as a freshmen because the tards in my section couldn't read a drill chart. Things are quite different today than they were back in the dark days of TGBFTL

agreed. I joined, stayed two years, and then ran for my life. I could not deal with the tards, not to mention most had a touch of the ghey.

If it wasn't for all the free football I wouldn't have lasted a year.

Roy King heard my son's audition two years ago.
Didn't hurt his chances that RK's wife is from our home town.

My son's still playing trumpet down there.
I think they call him Jethro!
