Somebody needs to see who's merchandise sold more over the last 5 years here in LA... Saints or Tigers? Wonder where that info is located?

This is what it all comes down to. When the Saints are going 3-13 I guarantee you there are far more LSU fans. If God forbid the Tigers ever go 3-8 there will be far more Saints fans.

I'd say Saints fans. Sure the winning helped, but in areas like mine (Lake Charles) We LSU fans are the minority. You've got McNeese here, and other small schools across the state that pull college loyalties. Saints are statewide and have nothing else to compete with except like someone already said - Dallas, esp in Northern LA. I'd give the Saints the edge.

The Saints didn't lose a game that year.

More Saints fans or LSU fans

you can't really compare College and Pros as far as fans go, because

1. The Saints fanbase has grown because of the success.

LSU gains a few thousands of fans with every new year(freshmen and tranfer students), plus their family for the most part.

Saints fans and it's not close, a lot of people are Saints fans deep down, you can blanket all of South Louisiana, a population of about 2.5 million at least, as all Saints fans. Difficult to find 2.5 million LSU fans in the state, lots of colleges in our state

For the record, I'm a fan of both and I would imagine that half the fanbases are the same. I am not an alumni of LSU, (LSUE graduate) nor is anyone in my family, but we bleed P & G. The difference for me is that I would never lose sleep over the success/failure of the Saints (even though I was pretty excited Sunday night), but I would for LSU. Between my wife, son, and me we have about 80 LSU shirts compared to 4 Saints shirts. I would attribute alot of the Saints fanbase this year to the obvious success. For instance my sister claims to be this huge Saints fans and was so emotional after the win, but she has never been to a game or could even tell me who the coach or QB was before Brees and Payton. If you wouldve asked this question 10 years ago, or 10 years from now how different would these responses be?

4 years sold out superdome, 30K waiting list

Just like every NFL franchise has a 'waiting list'. I'm a redskins fan. I know all about supposed waiting lists. Also, the Dome is small.

But you're seeing right now a lot of people jump on the saints, who aren't real fans. They like watching them and are enjoying their success, but don't watch every game and live and die with it like people do for LSU. And it's not at all just LSU alumni or students or their families who root for LSU. All you have to do is go to an LSU game to realize that.

The only nfl franchise to be famous for their fans wearing bags over their heads and called their team the aints. Gee.. not even close.

What a stupid thread. Go back a few years when LSU won a national title.

This. Also remember LSU has been around a lot longer and had more success than the Saints.

Granted...no idea what part of state they used..and it's only 410 people..but S.I. did a poll in their 50th anniversary issue which was a few years ago.

LSU - 4th in the NCAA in sales (behind UT-Austin, UF, and UGA) as reported by the Collegiate Licensing Company (who is the largest and oldest college licensing company and manages over 200 colleges)

Saint - 10th in the NFL in sales using nflshop.com as a measuring stick. Drew Brees's jersey is the 25th most popular jersey (the only Saints player on the list).

Apples to oranges obviously with no $$ figures to directly compare (and I don't think you'll find those numbers, at least not for the Saints).

ETA:
10th not 11th as I had. Don't know why I put that.

if i had to guess id say it was pretty even. w the saints you have to include miss, ala, and nw florida plus the thousands of ppl that are displaced around the country. also the fans in other countries that root for nfl teams. i cant begin to image the amount of LSU fans...i do kno just on gameday LSU has double the amount of fans just on campus that even fit in the superdome.....so at least i do know its defntly not a large difference or as some say "not even close"..its more like to close to call.

The only reason this is a debate is because the Saints are winning. I admit, I cheered for them but am a LSU alum from Texas. My allegiance is to the Cowboys.

People forget that LSU has tons of students/fans (aka my parents) that are from different states that are TAF members and the whole deal.

LSU runs the state and it's not even close...And by the way this is a good thing. Look at a Saints fan when they pan the crowd. Yikes..

Yep. There are LSU watch parties all over L.A. on game days including the official place the alumni chapter meets. We even have a Persian alumni group that gets together at an alums house to watch the games.
