Why is Louisiana State always referred to as LSU, while we have Ohio State, Penn State. Oklahoma State. etc? Any particular reason?

But is it some tradition that was started, does the school request the media refer to them as that?

Because OSU could mean both schools you mention in the OP. LSU has no duplicate.

I remember asking my dad that when I was about 10. He responded by saying "which one sounds better to you?" For some reason, it made PERFECT sense to me.

3 OSUs, at least 2 MSUs, Penn is only one syllable.

My best guess...

There's only one LSU. Meaning, there's only one state that starts with an L.

It's the same with FSU. Do some say Florida State...sure, but most just say FSU.

Besides, you couldn't just say OSU. Which OSU would you be talking about?

Penn State is just easier to say than PSU...

Any others? I can debunk all night.

Because Louisiana has 5 syllables so announcers said LSU. Penn st and ohio st are just one so it's quick to say. Okie st isn't called OSU because OSU could also refer to many schools: oregon st, ohio st ext... Name another state that starts with L?

The panhandlers only use two syllables:
"Flo State"

Or you could just say Louisiana State University if you're not into the whole brevity thing
