There's also SMU (Southern Methodist) of College Football Death Penalty Fame and BYU.

One other distinction that can also be made between LSU and the other State Schools like Ohio State, Penn State, Florida State, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, etc is that LSU does not technically have a "Louisiana" counterpart unlike the others (U of Ohio, Penn, Florida, Oklahoma, Oregon, etc).

4 pages and no reference to SLU

If you don't live in Florida, you call Florida State "Florida State" not FSU

"Technically" there are two other universities in the U.S. with the abbreviation LSU, but neither have football teams although one of them is a Div 1 University.

La Sierra University - Small Private University in California and does occasionally use LSU as an abbreviation according to online postings such as Wiki, Google, etc.

La Salle University - Atlantic Ten School in Pennsylvania disbanded their IAA football team in 2007. Usually just goes by La Salle so although its abbreviation is technically LSU it doesn't really ever go by that name.

There is also a LSSU (Lake Superior State University) in Michigan which is a small public university that plays in Div II except for Hockey. Does not have football team since the 50s.

That said, I do think your point is still valid that no one really thinks of anything by Louisiana State University when they hear "LSU."
