It's not intentional grounding because it was a backwards pass. Intentional grounding only applies to forward passes.

the old ones are better. The new ones are just too slick, but of course with the turf people I guess that is good. We mind as well just do under armor...

Nice. Never thought of that. Guess that is why I do not wear B & W stripes.

P.S. So, uh, "KABOOM." Dork.

Seriously?

I was mocking Tangerine's excessive use of the "Kaboom" terminology in his original thread. It's a term best left to pimple-faced high school sportscasters who ply their trade on public access television.

at which point either team could have advanced the ball upon touching, i'm guessing.

on one play that night, the Pac-10 refs in TS missed the false start, got the graze of the facemask by Thibodeuax (which he's never denied, or at least in Mule's book he didn't), and then missed again on McDonald's backwards pass. sounds about right.

The video suggests otherwise.

If you were wearing a helmet with a facemask, looking forward, and someone were to swings his fist from one side and hit (without grasping) the facemask, which is protruding out a couple of inches, do you think your head would move to one side?

I assume that by posting your FAQ link you intend to offer the explanation there as your answer.

That answer does not hold water for me - there is no substantiation for your statement that it would have to be pulled.

The reason I asked the question is because I looked at the videos (the head movement is only apparent in the slow motion version by the way), and it looked to me very much like the head movement of a boxer getting hit. If a left hook to the chin can cause a boxers head to rotate to his left, why can't a clubbing blow to a protruding facemask do the same thing?

Thanks LSU92.

I was there. I was 17 years old, and that play is forever etched in my memory. While I was on the wrong side of the field to clearly see the facemask, which I have to now admit was a facemask, I have always known that the right side of the USC line moved just before the ball was snapped. Hell, even Ray Charles could see that!

Even if the refs didn't see that, why didn't they call McDonald for intentional grounding? I'm pretty sure he ditched the ball to avoid being tackled, and I don't think the guy he tried to throw to was an eligible receiver.

LSU got royally screwed on that play on so many levels it just isn't funny.

FRom what I have heard, he threw it backwards as in it was not a pass, but a lateral.

If it was a lateral, was the play blown dead? Who got the ball? That I do not remember.

I do remember this: my freakin' ears were still ringing on Monday when I went to school. Still the consistently loudest game I've ever attended at Tiger Stadium.

I know it's hard. I guess he could have been "clubbed", but that is far from a "graze". Even if so, from the position of Benji and QB, Benji did not have enough leverage to cause such an sudden and awkward jerk of the head that only stopped when the hand was released.

It was a legit facemask, plain and simple.

I was thinking along the same lines.. while the guy's head DID move, I didn't see the "obvious" change in the plane of the CHIN that you see with a blatant facemask.. as the head rotates, you usually see the chin either dipping down to the chest or up and away.. none of that vertical change in the chin on that clip. So, AT MOST it should have been a 5 yarder at that point and time.. (which would have been negated had the square dancing do-si-do on the right side of the line been called)!

I was a little kid, and it is still the loudest, greatest game I'll ever attend.

Someone described it very well when they called it a "raging inferno". That's exactly how that crowd was - still the only time I've completely lost my voice after a game.

At that point, all face-masks were 15 yards. There were no 5 or 10 yarders.

I to was 17 years of age, and without a doubt the loudest, most exciting game Ever. NOTHING TO COMPARE IT TOOOOO...Nothing....If I die, and God gives me one sports event to re-experience, there will be no hesitation, and God will already know my answer. That game still brings great joy and tears to my eyes even at 47 years of age. I was able to experience LSU vs Bama this year from the side lines first time ever, but it fails to even remotely replace my experienece that night in 1979.

You are welcome. Glad I can bring back some memories. It's such a pain to get videos online or I could post more. Good times.
