re: LSU USC 1979 False Start on Facemask Play

Happened to be there and the funny(sickening)
part is everyone in the stadium saw the false
start as it happened and was screaming for a flag
even before the facemask occurred. Most were hoping the laundry was just a delayed toss for
the false start but the zebras were blind to justice that night. There was an earlier obvious
holding call on a run by Charles White that led
to a score also. Poor Cholly Mac was beside himself during and after the game.
Payback was hell out in LA in '84.

So, uh, "KABOOM." Dork.
Kaboom does not apply to me. I did not dispute the false start, like thousands of LSU fans who claimed Benji did not get the mask.

And by the way, if you had bothered to actually read a book or two on college football rather than mindlessly trolling the internet, you would have known that Benji Thibodeaux already conceded, long ago, that his hand was on the facemask of McDonald. On page 22 of "Game of My Life," he states:
You need to tell that to the many LSU fans who believe it never occurred.

But the critical question, the only question that mattters, the only question that has mattered for thirty years is: did he graze or did he grasp? The 1979 facemask rule (which didn't distinguish between incidental and major facemask penalties) stated that a penalty only occured if a player "grasped" the facemask.
The vid also answers that question. Simple laws of physics would indicate that if a player is moving in one direction, a graze, brush, or whatever would not cause his head to suddenly move in the opposite direction in an awkward manner. WHile I doubt Benji grabbed the mask intentionally, his fingers obviously got caught in the mask causing the movement. Benji can oncede all he wants that he grazed it. He was in the heat of the battle and likely thought he did just that. What he failed to state or recall is that his fingers must have gotten caught in the mask, albeit for a brief moment.

In any event, your arrogant post was distasteful and clearly evidenced that you didn't fully appreciate the long history of the debate.
I certainly appreciate the history of the debate. I just do not agree with it-nor does the video-taped evidence.

The work I was doing on the 1915 team entailed listing everyone I could find who went out for the team, lettermen, Baby Tiger team, etc...
I found 4 things so far about the 1915 team that have to be corrected in Taylor's book and the LSU media guide and 2 other items I have to track down.
LSU depended on Taylor's work on the early years and he has many facts wrong on near every year even into the 1930's.
But as H.W. said his work was a base to start from and would be added too in the future.

That link is incredible. I will have to try to locate it (the tackle off the bench) on film. If I do, I will try to you tube it.

Also they could have thrown a flag for grounding, McDonald throw the ball to a tackle (68)and no back, te or wr is near him.
yeah, the no call on the intentional grounding by McDonald has always gotten overlooked.

I bet if it had happened on the game winning drive like this did we would have heard you in Katmandu.

IMO, not really. SC was called for an facemask on UT's game winning drive on a 3rd or 4th down. Really has not come up since.

Maybe because the guy nearly dragged the UT player to the ground by the mask. I mean there is inadvertant and there is straight up personal foul. The one on USC v UT was a personal foul without argument.

H. Warren Taylor
Forty-two Years on the Tiger Gridiron
Published in 1936 and a 2nd edition was printed in 1974.
Yes I'm working on a book about the 1908 season, but need 5 weeks off to finish it to visit Vanderbilt, Auburn, Tulane and LSU.
That means it may take 3 years, God willing.

I Googled that and it is several hundred dollars. Do you have that book or know much about it?
Posted on 1/20/09 at 3:54 pm to LSUBEATLES
Your book about your trials you've experienced in your love life with John Brady is much cheaper.
Posted on 1/20/09 at 3:58 pm to LSUBEATLES
It is not worth over 100.00 on the first edition, except if is signed or owned by a very important person.
On ebay it shows up all the time and you should be able to pick it up for 30-70.
Try to get a 2nd edition as the cover is able to stand more wear and the pages are printed on acid free paper.
The 2nd edition appears to have been a limited print, and runs 20-50.
I have 3 first editions, Berine Moore's copy, Jim Corbett's copy, a copy I picked up in the mid 70's and a 2nd edition I use to update and bring with me all the time while looking up older LSU information.

Does the book have much info on the 1915 and 1916 teams? Could you post a recap of what it says? Thanks!

Kinda curious as to how you managed to have a copy of the game, or Cholly Mac's show for that matter. VCR's for consumers didn't start selling until '81 or so and the game wasn't on tv anyways. ESPN had not yet started broadcasting so i'm guessing perhaps the game was rebroadcast on ESPN classics or something? I was at the game and consider it to be one of the top 3 I have attended, have always been frustrated to never have been able to view the game again.

Do all teams fans do this? Gripe about bad calls years after the fact?
Do Hurricane fans still bitch about the phantom pass interference call that prolonged the BCSNCG against tOSU?
