LSU defense starting to show cracks. Try for ASU after a long break. Conversion no good. 10-5 LSU 31:00 to play.

LSU looks to be running low on gas. Depth could be a problem. Try ASU.

Tied up 10-10 20:00 to play.

Huge 70m break off of a stolen scrum by LSU. Tigers score with ASU on the back foot a couple phases later. Try!

17-10 Tigers. 14:00 to play.

Odd penalty. ASU takes the quick tap with LSU not ready. High tackle, penalty try. Yellow card against LSU. Tied up 17-17.

LSU looks like it's out of gas and they're playing a man down now with the yellow card. Try ASU conversion no good

22-17 ASU lead. 8:00 to play.

Try ASU with 0:00 on the clock. Ref kept letting them play, no clue how much longer he plans on going.

Ball game. Final score 27-17 Arkansas State.

Great showing by the Tigers against one of the premier rugby teams in the country. Just ran out of gas and then a late yellow card doomed them.

After watching this game. LSU should have no trouble handling their remaining schedule and there's a good chance that they'll meet Arkansas State again come playoffs.

D1A Rugby Top 20

LSU jumps up one spot to #17 in the country after a close loss against powerhouse program Arkansas State. LSU was up 17-10 with less than 15 minutes to play but couldn't hold off the attack once ASU starting sending in fresh legs. While not the result that the Tigers were hoping for they showed that their starting 15 can run with any team in the country.

LSU has a couple of weeks off with Mardi Gras coming up. The Tigers will be back in action March 4th in College Station against Texas A&M. A win against the Aggies should clinch a spot for LSU in the Red River Championship Game.

The LSU full squad has a couple of weeks off before gearing up against Texas A&M in College Station March 4th.

In the meantime. LSU is sending two 7's squads to the New Orleans Collegiate 7's Tournament. The Tigers hope to have a good showing but winning the tourney will be difficult as they haven't practiced 7 man rugby this season.

The matches will be streamed compliments of GiftTimeRugby

Unfortunately the University of Arkansas Rugby Club will not be able to make it down to Baton Rouge for their March 14th Match against LSU. I heard a rumor and have confirmed it with someone from the club. They listed a few reason as to why, mostly due to funding constraints.

It's a shame as that match was going to be Family Day for the Tigers with many players having family coming to town to watch the game and visit. I believe that the match will be recorded as a 20-0 forfeit victory for LSU in terms Red River Standings purposes. This basically clinches the division for LSU securing them a spot in the Red River Championship. LSU would have to lose out against A&M and Houston (A team LSU beat 139-0) for A&M to overtake them.

In other Red River Rugby news, Oklahoma is taking on Baylor for a defacto division championship game for the Red River North. The winner of that match will be in the driver's seat to face off with LSU in the Red River Championship.

For LSU this season, winning the Red River is not the final goal. LSU is hoping to dominate their remaining schedule in order to rise in the rankings and secure a home playoff match. This time LSU hopes to be better prepared than for last year's match against Arizona. The Tigers hope to at least make it to the Round of 8.

LSU stormed through the competition on their way to the championship in the 2nd Annual NOLA Collegiate 7's Tournament. I can't find scores for all of the matches, but for the ones I caught streaming the competition was outclassed.

Here's your champion team.

Winning this tournament brings an interesting discussion up for LSU. The club will always be a 15s squad first. But if offered a spot in one of the nation 7s tournaments that you see on TV, a bid would be hard to turn down.

LSU has another week off before heading up to College Station for what could potentially clinch their Red River division.

As always,

The scores for the matches in the NOLA 7's tournament has been posted. LSU trailed only once throughout the entire tournament 0-5 during the semi-final match against LSU-Alexandria which didn't last very long. That match was the closest one of the day for the Tigers as the final was 19-10 in the Tiger's favor. Overall LSU outscored it's opponents 158-20 over the five game tournament.

It's been a quiet couple of weeks for the Tigers as they've had open weeks for 15's. They did manage to put together a couple of 7's teams and won the NOLA Collegiate 7's Tourney. What makes this accomplishment impressive is that only one practice was devoted to practicing 7's on the Thursday before the tournament. The following weekend was Mardi Gras weekend, and the Tigers make it a point to avoid scheduling matches during that weekend with so many distractions.

In rankings news, LSU has moved back up to 17th in the D1A Rugby Poll (The official poll), and are now ranked all the way up at 14 in the Goff Rugby Poll. For obvious reasons I'll shamelessly use the higher ranking for my posts.

D1A Rugby Poll
Goff Rugby Report Poll

Up next for the Tigers is a battle with Texas A&M in College Station this upcoming weekend. These two teams met back in November with LSU leaving with a 36-26 victory. LSU and A&M have a long standing rivalry in rugby going back to the days when LSU, A&M, and UT would battle it out to be Texas Rugby Union Champs. LSU has come out ahead in recent years but most of the matches have ended up a close contest. A win here for the Tigers will clinch the Red River South and secure a spot in the Red River Championships against a surging Baylor team.

If anyone's in the area feel free to check out the match. It promises to be a battlefield due to the rivalry and tradition of the two programs.

Great read on LSU. It's nice to see an independent pair of eyes confirm what I've been saying.

LSU Emerging as Serious D1A Competitors

The Tigers have the capability to pull of a win over just about anyone in the country except maybe 4 teams (Life, Cal, BYU, St. Mary's). That said, this LSU team certainly has a real chance to make some noise in the playoffs this year and people are starting to notice.

LSU on the board early after a great counterattack by the winger Chaz Mitchell and scores a couple of phases later. Conversion good. 7-0 Tigers.

Yellow card on Tiger 8 Man. Down a man with 20 to go in the half. Still 7-0. Aggies threatening. Bad lineout throw from the Tigers, penalty then on LSU, Aggies score on the quick tap. 7-5 Tigers lead.
