Right, there needs to be more info to make that number useful. It really isn't all that useful for us because all we have is the number.

For example, how many of the 16 were hits?

Dont see that as important

How many were put in play?

obviously important

How many were strikes?

Irrelevenat IMO

What was the speed of the pitch coming in? How many were pulled? How many went with an outside pitch?

Only the first of these 3 do I find somewhat important.

all this tells us is that 16 balls were hit very hard

Has anyone said it means anything other than that? I think that was the point.

Of course it was the point. Assuming they were all balls put in play, I think its very telling of how unlucky we were last night.

Yeah if all were in play that's just unlucky. They still had a few errors we could have capitalized more on.

Josh, come on...

You said that the stat showed how "Its a better indicator of how LSUs offense performed than the result showed."

Therefore, if all 16 of those hit balls were outs, then it does nothing to support your statement above.

Again, it goes to the point of how well the O performed. If half of those balls hit were low and away, and thus produced hard-hit foul balls, then the pitcher wins...and the stat is irrelevant.

There are a couple in every game that are out of the strike zone.

We obviously just don't agree on this, to me the result of the play is almost meaningless with this stat.

But would you not say that a 100+ mph batted ball for a hit is a better result than a 100+ mph batted ball for an out?

Lol, of course i would.

But for me, if i put a ball in play at 100mph or greater, than as a hitter i did all i could do within reason to win the at bat. So in my mind, its a successful at bat, regardless of the outcome.

Hard to place the ball on a line drive.

But if it's coming in at 94/95, then you really didn't do that much more...

You squared up the bat with the ball, all you can ask of a hitter IMO

What I would find useful, is the average of ball per game we hit at or above 100 mph. I'm guessing around 12.

You could ask him to put it in play

But you don't have to "square up" to add 6 mph off an aluminum bat. I'd guess that most, if not all of those 16 hit balls, came off that reliever.

All I'm saying is that the ball speed off the bat, while it looks impressive on paper, does not mean that much unless more data is provided that can qualify WHY it should be considered a meaningful stat.

Understood

I'd actually say most were off the first guy who was low 90s, pretty normal.
