LSU defense, would LSU be better running a different defense?

From what Chavis ran?
Chavis was damn good during his tenure minus the occasional hiccup (every coach has) and LSU was spoiled by what he accomplished with a lot of young players. However, would LSU be better of switching the type of defense it runs.

Example: a team switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense

A 3-4 defense doesnt really work well in college with all the spread up-tempo offenses. Plus, it's very hard to recruit for with the size of DL and LB you need.

Our players don't fit a 3-4 scheme and football is trending towards the spread offense which is a headache for 3-4 defenses

I kind of like the 4-2-5 defense. I think TCU runs that style

you know we say this, but how many DL have we sent to 3-4 teams in the past?

in my opinion we could recruit 3-4 linemen and we can recruit 3-4 outside linebackers.

The issue would be getting ILBs, but we have Garrett and Beckwith on staff right now.

I think we could do it in the future.

Plus how many DT's and LBs have left the state just because they clearly were a better fit for a 3-4? Not saying we should, but we could.

Honestly i think a base 4-2-5 offense is flawed and wouldn't work against teams that can run the ball with any power. you have to be able to stop the run in the SEC

Chavis's defense is great at stopping spread offenses but struggles against power running teams. I would much rather beat Bama every year instead of the Little Brother Aggies.

We don't have the time or patience to have a transition year for a 3-4 switch

Nothing wrong with continuing to run a 4-3. But I want to see more pressure, varied looks and some mixed coverages to create confusion for opposing offenses. A more attacking style and more innovation, rather than just read/contain.

LSU needs to figure out which offense they need to run, we need more help there then on defense.

LSU coulda woulda shoulda beat both this year with 1 more minute of the same D as the prev 59.
A bit better O would go a long ways toward that goal also.

You need a 4-3 to contain the spread.

Shultz-ie you are correct sir!!!

switching defensive schemes for next year can't see it, if so just check off another transition year for LSU!!!!

Yup. Only way it would work is with 2 ELITE middle linebackers that can stuff the run and drop back in coverage.

It's my personal favorite defense, but it won't cut it against teams that play like Bama

Ole Miss runs a 4-2-5. They were blasted this year by the run.(LSU, Arkansas, Auburn, and Alabama)

It doesn't work. A 4-2-5 is better for air raid/spread offenses, but teams in the SEC are actually moving away from it. At least in the West. It's still about power run. Just run a 4-3 Base and need be switch to a Nickle package or a Dime.

3-4 and 4-3 are interchangeable, but it really relies on personnel that LSU hasn't recruited for. Mainly in the linebacker category.

Everyone here wants pressure on the QB, that doesn't come from our inability to scheme, it comes from experience and talent. That is OUR issue.

With chavis's defense (Unusual for a 4-3) his ends play super conservative and has to blitz to get pressure. The ends aren't getting sacks and that is a shame to me

That is the best thing about getting a new DC is Chavis has never been known for pass rush from his ends. Not at Tennessee not ever.

thats not always the case. We do it against mobile QBs, but remember Mingo and Monty used to get pressure all the time..

We just haven't had that in the last few years.

This!!! And who ever the coach is needs to teach these boys how to disguise a blitz. You know make it look like it's coming from one side and cone from a other or make it look like we are and aren't or vise versa. Also be better at putting the right personnel on the field. Simplify our calls on both sides of the ball. Need to make all our looks interchangeable, and like the guy said play half man half zone on some downs. Or have one guy playing man or zone when you think you know who and where the ball is going. This D could get much better IMO & we could have a DC that gets out there and recruits like a beast.

4-2-5 is the best or 3-3-5
