Second thanks for the recap. Good job. Carmouche was better last night than any of us expected I think but you can't judge anyone by just one exhibition game.

I agree with this for sure. He looked great, but he didn't wow with skills as much as athleticism.

quote:

Corban Collins impressed me as being able to play either point or shooting guard. Good solid player who will only get better.

I definitely see Collins and Hickey on the floor together for a decent chunk of time. Collins looked good. He made some mistakes but has a nice shot and can play any of the three guard positions with ease.

quote:

Eddie looked more confident and relaxed than I have ever seen him. He gave us his usual hustle, working hard on defense, taking charges, etc.

Eddie being Eddie. Agree he looked more comfortable.

quote:

Malik Morgan, I know what I said about just one exhibition game, but damn! Did he look great or what. This kid has a great future ahead of him.

My favorite part is how fast and smooth his shot goes up. Very nice stroke.

Stringer won't get as much playing time but for all the naysayers he will be high scorer in a couple of games at least. Under Coach Jones new system he will get lots of open looks off of fast breaks that he rarely got under Trent's walk it up slow one. And for all of his faults the guy can really fill it up when he is hot.

I think if Stringer plays more efficiently, he can still be a double digit scorer without the wasted possessions due to him jacking up shots from the timeline.

What do y'all expect the staring lineup to be with hickey and hammink back?

Its so hard to say what coach is going to do with Hammink. I thought it would be Hammink and Coleman taking 4 and Eddie and JOB taking the 5 but I think now he is going to use them all interchangeably and it doesn't really matter who starts. When one gets tired, another comes in.

Morgan will get minutes and so will Collins. Not sure how much. Morgan only got 19 minutes last night but still scored 18 so who knows.

Yea, I could also see Hammink playing the 4, with his European style of play (backdoor cuts, small jumper, good passing ability). Have just always thought having stringer on the floor for too long was a negative asset. Cant play with 5'9 guards in this league, who are only streaky scorers. Wouldn't be surprised if morgan was starting at the 3 and carmouche at the 2 by SEC play. @ and # are pretty much interchangeable in JOJO's offense right now. GONNA BE DROPPING TREYS LIKE A NERVOUS LUNCH LADY. Thanks for the insite though man

The real question is who is going in the closing lineup. I do not think Stringer will be in there and maybe not Eddie.

If I had it my way it would be:

1. Hickey, Collins
2. Morgan, Stringer
3. Carmouche, Stringer/Collins
4. Hammink, Coleman
5. JOB, Ludwig

At the end of the day starting or not, minutes will be shared.

Carmouche

I really like this kid.

I typically hate watching teams that play 4 guards, but I think this squad has more then enough athleticism to make it interesting. Also, next year's team is gonna be stacked

Thank you for the recap. I am optimistic about Men's basketball. I don't have unrealistic expectations for this year but am looking for a team that can surprise some people and then maybe next year, going to the Dance.

I wasn't excited at first about Coach Johnny Jones but I think he is going to work out alright ! Just keep the program clean !

Thank you South for your great work and insight.

Random thought I had last night South, when's the last time you saw an LSU roster sheet with 14 names on it? Granted 3 were walk ons, but still under TJ I think the most we had on a roster was either 12 or 13

Wow, I mean LSU will probably get to that point in the future, but we had what 5 scholarship players and a signee for this season before Jones took the job? The fact that we even got to 14 is astounding imo.

In Trent Johnson's 4 years lsu had - 10 scholarship recruits and 3 walkons.
In Jones 7 months - 10 scholarship (including the committed for 2013) and 3 walkons.

That's absurd. We are seeing very quickly that Johnson was just an awful recruiter.

One of the things that annoyed me with Johnson was that he never wanted to fill up all his scholarships or all of his coaching staff positions. It's like he was intentionally handicapping himself.
