Well you didn't watch a whole lot then. We spent a whole lotta time in zone in the late third and fourth.

We also changed our personel packages and our DL shifts.

Not sure what you saw

The defense looked gassed because the offense couldn't sustain a drive. They also played soft trying not to give up big plays that would get State back in the game. I'd pin the defense's struggles on the offensive coaching staff (Miles) and its conservative playcalling that did not allow the offense to sustain drives.

The defense got gassed when MSU adjusted and shut LSU's vanilla offense down
Les face it, the offense has been the same since LM has been here basically. Hasn't mattered who the oc is. This we have been calling vanilla offense is what it is, our offense. Plain and simple. Very boring if ya ask me.

They ran 80 plays. We went ultra conservative on offense, went a whole lot of 3 and outs and put it all on our defense to be out there the entire second half. This is the Les Miles game plan. The funny thing is he has nothing to do with the defense.

What was most impressive to me was the last play before the field goal attempt. He put pressure there. Chavis wouldn't have and then they would have been left with a much more manageable winner. I liked it. I agree with the others about the team being a bit gassed. We will need to find more depth to rotate in to keep guys fresh.

Agreed. He was sent 5 or 6 a few times, and even sent 7 once on the last drive. Dak leaned on being able to throw in the vicinity of Wilson and have him just go get it a few times under pressure. He is a big physical target. But kudos to Tre White. He got the last laugh stopping that last pass to him with great coverage.

As for how thin we are, I know injuries could be a big issue. However, how are we really any thinner than last year in terms of on the field play? The roster numbers on the line and at DT may be smaller, but Chavis didn't play half the guys we had. We ran 3 DTs 90% of last season, with Bain getting an occasional snap here and there, and one of the 3 being an undersized Lewis Neil after QT went down. He didn't rotate tons of LBs either.

The D got tougher as last season went on. Barring injuries, they will again this year.

D-line looked gassed in second half and that was the difference in the way they played, they were in Daks grill the whole first half just about and soon as that changed momentum in the game changed. I think their goal was to stuff the run and make Dak beat them with his arm which was working until they were winded.

This. We decided that even with going against possibly the best QB we'll see in the regular season, we'd shut down the offense, and allow the thin, but talented, defense to win the game for us. Our guys were tired and White was getting beat like a rented mule last night.

With our DBs I like the game plan, blitz the LBs and let the DBs cover. As a result if the opposing team QB can make the dump off in the middle the so be it but we faced the best QB we will face last night. The future is bright for our Defense getting back to bringing pressure.

Adjustments have never been a strong suit of a Les Miles team. See 01/09 as a great example of this.

I agree. I was referring primarily to Les's offense. The defense was playing lights out until the offense went into hibernation mode. MSU made some adjustments and had success once LSU's couldn't stay off of the field and just wore out. This was a direct result of Mile's typical offensive adjustments.

good observation.

we schemed to stop the run, both their backs and dak. we schemed to stop the deep pass. something has to give and that was the short pass. my only problem is that we did not at least mix it up a coupla times to give a db a chance to jump a route. Prescott had lots of time to find a wr. the good news is that most of the newer qb's we'll face would not have handled the situation as good as he and he was really on with his accuracy (until the end thank god).

I was a little disappointed with calling two td's back. That often comes back to bite you.

Meh, Dak is the best QB we will see all year.

The best all-purpose QB. The best pure QB could be Kelly at Ole Miss. He looked sharp and got the ball out of his hands quickly. The style of play we used in the defensive backfield would likely get exploited so I hope we start showing some different things. We'll know more about him when Ole Miss plays Alabama next week, but he definitely has the tools.

Sorry, that 4th Quarter DB scheme really bothered me. If that part came from Alabama, he needs to give it back and come up with something new and a bit more aggressive down the stretch. Recognizing that some of this was because the d-line was tired, we need to have an adjustment for this and we have plenty of DBs to come up with something.

Like when Chavis blitzed against Bama and Yeldon scored on the screen in 2012.

Stop pretending like you know anything at all about football. Like how to coach it or play it.

There isn't a poster here, not a single one that know as much about football as Les Miles, Kevin Steele or Cam Cameron.

A bunch of guys sitting on couches thinking they know more than the coaches.

Coaches recruit these kids, know them, observe them in meetings, on the practice field, on film of practice, in games, on film of games. Yet everyone here knows better. Its laughable.

If Miles "opened it up" and Harris threw a couple picks the same idiots criticizing him would be screaming he should have just rode Fournette and protected Harris on the road.

Dumbasses.

Agreed. Not sure what he was seeing, but Rickey Jefferson was living in the box until they started chucking it. I think we were willing to let them have some short stuff if it meant keeping Dak from running wild on us again.

The D was tired and Dak and Derunya are as good as it gets. It is what it is.

Well, he was basically tasked with covering Wilson 1 on 1. That would be a tough task for any CB, as big and physical as Wilson is. I'll give White one thing-he didn't quit or back down, and ended up getting a critical stop 1 on 1 vs Wilson on the last drive.

The underneath game was there for the bulldogs so they took it. Steele's D held them to under 100yds on the ground, Dak had negative yds rushing and held them to 19 points. The problems were self inflicted taking TDs off the board 1st half then going too conservative second half.

I give the D an A for the game.

The penalties were expected in the first game of the season.

The QB play I give an A (he did the most with what he was given pass wise and no turnovers.

I give the O placalling a C for puckering up when the plan should have been to put the game away.

On TV, it looked like LSU went to zone and secondary became timid and looked almost confused when Dak pressed the tempo

Looked the same to me. Also, the defense was sucking wind in the 4th when MSU went up tempo

I would add that this was the first game played. No matter how much you practice, you won't be in game shape until you get to play games. We're a week behind in development and conditioning.

Late in the season this might benefit us becausecwevwill be one game fresher than everybody else.
