Let's Rethink this whole National Seeding Thing

Previous CWS Champions who were not a National Seed
2015 Virginia - (33-19, 15-15) 1-3 in ACC Tournament, #3 Seed in USC Regional
2014 Vanderbilt - (40-16, 17-13) 1-2 in SEC Tournament, Regional Host
2013 UCLA - (39-17, 21-9) No Conference Tourney, Regional Host
2012 Arizona - (38-17, 20-10) No Conf. Tourney, Regional Host
2010 South Carolina - (43-13, 21-9) 0-2 in SEC Tournament, Regional Host
2008 Fresno State - (33-27, 21-11) 4-0 WAC Tourney Champion, #4 Seed in Long Beach State Regional
2007 Oregon State - (38-17, 10-14) No Conference Tourney, #3 Seed in Virginia Regional
2006 Oregon State - (39-14, 16-7) No Conference Tourney, Regional Host
2005 Texas - (43-12, 16-10) 2-2 in Big 12 Tournament, Regional Host
2004 Cal State Fullerton - (36-20, 19-2) No Conference Tourney, Regional Host
That means 10 of the last 12 CWS Champions weren't even a National Seed (10 of 17 total)

Still would like LSU to have a national seed.

Better to not play at Alex box? Yeah no. Home field throughout is a huge advantage. You forgot to mention only 8 teams of 64 are national seeds. This is a pretty irrelevant argument.
This is only one stat and you use it to make a generic statement. Dumb.

none of that means anything.

I'll take being at home over selective history.
Posted on 5/27/16 at 11:36 am to tadelatt
I think it is always better to play at the Box but this makes me feel a lot better.

This is the one thing that pisses me off when it comes to the length of a baseball season. It's all about when you get hot. It completely diminishes the value and significance of a large portion of the regular season and is the reason why college football will always be the superior sport (i.e. every game counts).
Seven of those teams failed to reach 40 wins in the regular season. That's pretty damn sad.

Who the hell wants to go to Lubbock TX for a game?

correlation does not equal causation
and besides our fans and players would obviously prefer the extra home games
this thread stinks

This is the dumbest logic ever. Yes let's make it harder on ourselves by having to go on the road. The reason that stat is like that is because there are a lot of really good teams that don't get a national seed and all it takes in baseball is to get hot at the right time.
Posted on 5/27/16 at 11:53 am to tadelatt
You definitely don't want 1 seed
Posted on 5/27/16 at 11:55 am to tadelatt
How many of them still hosted supers, though?

I've never understood nor joined in the animosity many posters on this board have for you.
Until now....

Perhaps it means that the selection committee needs to do a better job seeding teams. They have a unapologetic agenda of "spreading the wealth." They will give a lesser team in a under-represented region of the country a national seed just to build fan and viewing interest over there.
For example, Vanderbilt won in 2014 because they got paired with national seed Indiana, who didn't even make it out of their regional. They made it to the finals in 2015, and they were paired with another shitty artificially high-rated Big Ten team (Illinois) that only got their seed because they got a gaudy record playing in a bad conference, but a conference that rarely gets represented and could potentially draw big numbers.
The other factor is that they insist on pairing national seeds with the nearest 1 seed to them instead of weighting it.
That's how Virginia won in 2015. They gave the #1 national seed to UCLA, and paired them with UCSB. West Coast baseball has largely been a dumpster fire after Arizona and UCLA won their titles, but they still get 1 seeds and play each other in the Supers. In that bracket, you had 5 California teams out of the 8 teams, and two of the other three teams were the ones who won it, and both of them were 3 seeds.
Meanwhile, last year, you're getting slugfests in the Southeast between FSU and Florida, and TCU and aTm, and any of those teams were far superior to any team in the LA and Santa Barbara regionals.
I promise you that one or two SEC teams that have earned national seeds won't get them because "that's not fair" and "that's not good for the growth of college baseball."

All of LSU's championships came with a national seed. I want a national seed.

This is waaaaaaaaay too common nowadays.

While I don't agree with your logic (I want to watch LSU win the super at the Box!!!), I will say that the list you have shows the errors/biases of the selection committee. This "committee" shouldn't exist; at least not anymore.
I understand the argument that there's teams that can't really afford to travel and play; so those teams don't have the same opportunity to showcase their talents as the "big" teams. (Personally, I say "tough luck. If you can't afford to play with the big boys then either don't play or play understanding that this is the big boy's show." If that makes me a dick then so be it.)
They've become a lot like the selection of the Heisman - how many times recently has the trophy gone to the popular guy and not the best guy? How many of those winners have gone on to succeed at the next level? (/rant about Heisman)
This "committe" and the NCAA want to spread the host sites around and whatever altruistic reason they claim for doing so is bullshite. It is all about increasing overall attendance and thereby increasing their income. They're doing this at the expense of worthy teams but don't care about them because those teams have already reached the max/near-max of their profitability.
(Just like nerfing the hell out of the bats - so much so that they eventually had to change the ball; and they only changed the ball instead of the bats again because they didn't want to admit that they screwed up with the bats. (/rant about the bats))
