Of course, we found out some things after he left, but one cannot really argue with his results when he coached at LSU.
I absolutely CAN argue with his results.

He had NFL talent all over his rosters - and he gets credit for that.

But with all that talent, he underachieved, particularly in the last 3+ years when he went 15-11 in the SEC.

That was all Cam Cameron. Miles was always a pro-style guy, but Cam got really conservative towards the end there. Almost like he didn't trust his own passing game, a sharp change in direction from his start at LSU.
Good Lord. Cam was only here for the last few years and he was stuck with Harris as his starting QB. Why do you think he recruited Etling that last year? Yet Les still picked Harris as the starting QB, throwing away a game and essentially ending his career. Les's offenses stunk for years before Cam got here.

You must have forgotten about the terrible defense to go along with that offense. Defense wins championships

Lol you guys are funny, it’s like you forgot about the 80s, 90s, or the last two years. Les was consistent, which had its pros and cons, maybe another coach could have gotten us more 11-12 win seasons, but not many could have gotten us more 10 win seasons. Les only had a couple bad years, and those were what 8 win seasons?

I agree Les was not a great in game coach, he likely would never have built this program if Saban hadn’t already established it, and he refused to see where the game was going and either adopt the new game or respond in a way to beat it. But you can’t deny that he left LSU as a prestigious program much better than it was when he came, and that’s because he had a decade of consistent results and recruited in a way that built the brand. Saban was amazing for us and built us into what we became, but Les sustained that for a damn long time, and believe me many coaches could have wrecked that program taking over in 05.

Must have been all that great recruiting he does.

What’s weird is how his offensive approach became more conservative and old school with time. Okie State was throwing the ball all around the field in the early 2000’s, and we threw it around with Jamarcus in 2005-6, then by the end of his tenure we are 3 runs up the gut in a cloud of dust like it was the damn 1970’s.

Les was conservative on offense. The anomaly IMO was hiring Crowton and throwing as much as we did in 07 and 08.

There were times/ years he'd throw more than others, provided he had a QB he trusted (Josh Fields at OSU, Jamarcus, Flynn or Mett). But he'd prefer to run, throw efficiently (read: only as much as needed) and play stout defense.

Not knocking that as a philosophy, it can win a lotta games (that was effectively Saban's philosophy until somewhat recently, he was just better at executing). But you gotta adapt.

Alabama would have killed Jarrett Lee if he had played in the National Championship.

LSU was running the same stuff everyone else was running, except better. They still had the ability to stretch defenses with a vertical playaction passing game. They lost to Alabama in the NC game in 2012 due to Les's inability to switch out his QBs when it was obvious they had Jefferson's number.

The spread and gun stuff didn't really start taking over college ball until the mid-2010's, when Cameron arrived. Despite still being old-school, Cam's offense averaged 40+ points per game the first year with balance, then progressively got more conservative and more run heavy. So...you're wrong.

Very hard to believe he was a bad Mulligan away from winning two NC’s. I always said his best trait was getting those kids to play hard for him.

Les was a goofball, and I enjoyed his tenure for the most part however there were big ups and big downs.

Looking over the caliber of players he had, I'd say he GREATLY underachieved. To say he was a good manager when he had this much talent and only 1 championship to show for it is preposterous.

He is the ONLY coach in the BCS era to play in NC with 2 losses.

He wasted more talent than any other LSU coach.

We won in spite of him.

Consider this, he inherited an LSU team that had been recruited by the best coach ever in college football history for the previous 5 years and he still lost 2 games and had to back into the 07 title. The 11 title game looked like it was being coached by Ray Charles.

And Nick Saban lost to this moron 3 times, including at home in 2011...

At some point yall have to admit that maintaining some kind of standard for a decade in the golden era of the SEC is not something just any idiot could do.

Look no further than the last two years to see what an actual idiot looks like running LSU football

He stacked his rosters with punters and blocking tight ends. He sucked at roster management.

A lot of those achievements are a handful of the same players. Now go do the same thing with all the other blue bloods of college football other than Alabama. I'm sure you will find that few of those coaches accomplished more. But I know, it is the Rant...if it isn't Saban, it is unacceptable.
