And they're keeping WBB. What does that tell you?

Their athletic department profile is a tad different than ours.
Getting huge amounts of positive press for a women's sport would also really help our current image.
And while women's sports lose money, we can't get rid of them altogether because of Title IX so our best option is to make them lose less money by winning and also increase our positive press.

That they are a WBB school
That there were 50+ schools who turned a bigger profit in 2019
That their WBB success has no positive impact on their athletic department

The same people screaming to hire Mulkey, who would command most likely a record setting contract to pry away from Baylor, won't even watch a wbb on tv much less attend one. Maybe tune in for the championship game if it's convenient.
Have people forgotten the level of support for WBB when they were going to the Final Four?

Phenomenal coach
Would be a colossal loss of money for LSU

Nobody in the state of Louisiana, hell in the nation, gives two fricking dog shits about women's sports.
The only woman's sports I'd watch would be beach volleyball and it isn't for the competition.

We complain about LSU doing things just for the money. Here is a chance to do something for the pride of many of our alma mater. I doubt we made money during the WBB's Final Four run but it made meproud to be a Tiger. I have no problem pouring money into gymnastics and WBB

UConn finances by sport:
Football: $3.3m revenue, $16.6m expenses
MBB: $6m revenue, $9.9m expenses
WBB: $4.5m revenue, $8 million expenses
Other: $2.8 mil revenue, $25.8 mil expenses
Those figures obviously don't account for non-financial benefits the programs might provide.

wasn't that way when Sue Gunter had them as a top power. Hell the women were drawing more than the men sometimes.
Because 90% of the fans got in with a free ticket. They used to give them away at grocery stores. I guess they made ok money on concessions but that’s probably it.
I hate seeing people say go get her Scott. The way that guy hires coaches he’ll end up giving her a guaranteed 20 year contract at $10 million per year.

You keep saying this.
Do you mean direct financial gains only? Because other than that, it has made UCONN athletics a literal global brand. They don't put that on P&Ls.

She seemed more than amenable to discussing it. Make the damn deal Scott. Do your job

They maximize the sport and it absolutely has a positive impact on the school and athletics department.

ALL of UConn's sports lose money. But WBB basketball loses the least. They're getting rid of football because it loses the most:
quote:AP story from 2019
The football program, UConn’s attempt to break into the big-money world of the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), is a cash-eating failure. Average home attendance was 20,334 in 2018 — lowest since 2002. The team isn’t competitive against other FBS schools, and few outside Rentschler Field seem to care. Even the men’s basketball team isn’t as popular as it once was, with attendance sagging to a 30-year low.
None of UConn’s athletic teams, the basketball teams included, actually turn a profit. Football lost $8.7 million last year while men’s and women’s basketball lost $5 million and $3.1 million respectively. Another $22 million was spent on the rest of the sports offered in the program.

It's a P&L. It doesn't have impact analysis baked in regarding overall merch sales outside of the arena, brand recognition, endowment increases, etc.
