Arnsparger passed on Spurrier succeeding him? LOL Joe Dean was responsible.
Yea, you're right, I misspoke. If you remember though, Joe Dean basically let Arnsparger select his successor. Ultimately, it was Joe Dean who made the hire. I still blame Arnsparger though.
I guess that's what we get for hiring a Basketball guy as the AD of a football school.

I don't remember a #1 overall class, but you're right, he did have some good recruiting classes.
We didn't have Rival's and the like back then, but it was the #1 class with a few of the Publications...We had to buy pre-season mags back then.

I didn't do a lot of searching but I couldn't find any rankings for 1992 other than the Bleacher Report listing the 92' class as 8th best in LSU History...It's the Bleacher Report, so take it for what it's worth.

It was horrible. I still can't talk about it!

Someone said it earlier...Joe Dean was probably the worst hire that LSU ever made.

It was the worst thing ever to happen to LSU football. Ever.

One of the most touching, enduring things ever was Coach Mac on this chant. "I see all these signs everywhere - 'Help Mac Pack' - well, here I am, packing. But, nobody's helping me."
And he never turned his back on the university or the program after that. We should be so lucky to have a person of that character lead the football team (and, IMHO, we do at present.)
Hear, hear! Cholly was a great person and nobody loved LSU more. After he left, I felt bad for wanting him gone. If he could've just beat Bear every once in a while....

I remember reading that San Diego State was the only school that offered him as running back. A lot of schools dropped the ball on that one.

That's a true story. Marshall said it himself in an interview that I saw.

A shiny nickel for anyone who can name his recruiter...

That's true. Man, I forgot about what it was like back then. not NEARLY the coverage on recruiting. You would read about it when someone would sign in the newspaper, that's about it, unless you subscribed to some specific magazines. And there wasn't any real star ratings that I recall. It was more just blue chip or not.
Looking at that list, looks like that was before we started tapping in to some of that FL talent.

Pun pardoned. We had no excuse - he was right down the road. If our evaluation failed, we had no one to blame but ourselves.
It would have been nice to have him running the ball for us, though. He did alright and eventually we got the thing turned around, mainly with Alan Faneca, Kevin Faulk and, God bless him, Gerry Dinardo. He wasn't able to complete the job, but after Hallman's disastrous 4 years, Dinardo set the table nicely for Saban and Miles.

Funny, I was just thinking about this a couple hours ago.
He made two bowl games in three seasons as head coach of USM with 23 total wins.
His third season included a win over Alabama (in Birmingham) and another at Auburn. Their only losses were to ACC or SEC teams.
I wonder if auburn and Alabama might have lost on purpose to trick LSU into hiring him.
There was some excitement about him. My uncle was a former player and thought Hallman would at least have LSU back in bowl games.
People thought he would beat Bama, and he actually did in 1993. Of course, he was pretty terrible otherwise except for Mississippi St. and Tulane.

He had a remarkable three-game run in 1993. Beat Ole Miss, #5 Alabama and Tulane to bring the team to 5-5 with a chance to play in the now defunct Carquest Bowl in Miami. We played Arkansas at home the day after Thanksgiving, and got absolutely blasted.

I can't believe no one mentioned this so far in all the post.
We should have never hired a coach that was born in Tuscaloosa and was a Aggie.
He obviously didn't learn how to be a head coach under Bear, Jackie, and Ford.

Growing up near Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Hallman aspired to play for Alabama under head coach Bear Bryant. Alabama did not recruit him, although Gene Stallings at Texas A&M did. He played on the Aggies' 1967 squad, which garnered a Southwest Conference championship and a Cotton Bowl Classic win. In the bowl game, Hallman intercepted two passes by Alabama quarterback Ken Stabler.[1][2] Hallman graduated from the school in 1970.
As an assistant coach, Hallman served four seasons (1973–1976) under Bear Bryant at Alabama, and six seasons (1982–1987) under Jackie Sherrill at his alma mater coaching the defensive backs of the famed Wrecking Crew before being offered a head coaching position at Southern Miss. He coached linebackers (1979–1980) and defensive backs (1981) at Clemson University under Danny Ford.

I was living in Nashville when LSU beat Alabama that year, and my first introduction to how much Tennessee fans really despised Alabama was walking in the grocery store the next day with my LSU hat on and these UT fans yelled out "Go Tigers" in the middle of the grocery store, and then proceeded to came up to thank me, as If I had anything to do with it, for kicking Alabama's arse. A guy who worked for me, huge Bama fan complete with red truck and RTR emblazoned on the back window literally wouldn't even speak to me for a weak afterwards.

Lsu did the best they could. Remember, Bo Rein was killed and Stovall was hired under some unlucky circumstances. He got LSU to the Orange Bowl and shoulda beat a really good Nebraska team. Joe Dean hired Hallman because of the "you can't beat them, might as well join em" mentality. In defense of Camp Curley, he recruited decent.

Isn't it the Russell athletic bowl or something now?
I still remember how disappointed I was after that game. I hate when people act like being an LSU fan was always just a walk in the park.

WR Eddie Kennison,
This guy is not talked about enough on here. One of my favorite tigers as a kid.
Noticed Gabe Northern was in the same class. I have a vague recollection of Gabe, a DE/LB, getting a pick in the backfield one year. Anyone remember this? Which opponent?
