Just how bad was the Curley Hallman hire?

I know it was a bad hire but I don't know the details about it. I wasn't quite old enough to remember what the vibe was like after the hire and all it entailed. Was there any excitement whatsoever? From what I understand he had no business getting that gig.

considering we asked him to leave, it was about as bad as it gets short of him killing somebody or raping a kid

I always heard that he basically rode Brett Favre's coattails to get the job at LSU. But i am too young to remember the hiring process or who else was available.

But answer how bad of a hire/coach he was?

This is not scientific but the only other head coaching job he got after LSU? Muscle Shoals HS. If he were even a halfway decent coach you'd think he would have gotten some other job at some point.

At first we were Crazy about Curley but it didn't take long to get Curley about Crazy.

Almost as bad as the Saban hire. A little better than the Miles hire.

I remember one of the radio stations playing the Curley Shuffle every Friday. Those were some dark days.

Many Drunk Times during those Looong 4 Years, but I admit I originally liked the hire, couldn't wait for the fire.

He was HC at Southern Miss and coming off upset wins versus Alabama and Auburn, I believe.

His teams were winning and he was a tough discipline guy.

It did not appear to be a bad hire at the time.

It didn't work out at all, obviously.

He went on to be DC at MSU and perhaps another stop at the D1 coordinator level -- but eventually did coach HS... probably just because he enjoys coaching.

Carter was a better President than Curley Hallman was at coaching football.

It was that bad. If there was an analogue to the Bear Bryant award for bad coaching, it would almost certainly be called The Curley Hallman Award.

If Curley Hallman was coaching 1 team, and a fire ant colony was coaching the other team, the team coached by the fire ants would have the advantage in coaching.

It is impossible to do a worse coaching job than Hallman did at LSU, even in theory.

Program was beginning to slide downhill. Many alumni and former players felt the inmates had taken over the jail and wanted a tougher warden than what we had with Coach Archer. I think Coach Hallman was provided this information and nailed it during the interview process by declaring no ear rings, no black socks, etc if he became coach. I believe most of the feelings of the alumni and former players came about because of the fiasco at the end of the Florida State game with the big brawl.

While Coach Hallman was certainly not a hall of fame coach, some of his assistants were worse. I believe early on, players lost respect for some of the assistant coaches. As I recall, the RB coach was formerly a cheerleader at Southern Mississippi.

So, once it was going south, it went south and stayed south. I will say this for Coach Hallman. He was given the walking papers, but he stayed and coached the last two games of the season, both of which I think we won.

Well after they ran him out of the college game, he couldn't win at a high school.

So... There's that.

This reminded me of the Jerry Stovall days as well. 1983 not winning one SEC contest, I remember the student section yelling "Stovall Uhaul".

Worst hire in not only the football program's history but for any sport. Any coach who made the decisions that went on in the fourth quarter during the Interception game vs Auburn should get the treatment Al Golden just got from Miami. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.
