I think if we give JJ a few more years, we will see continual improvement.

However, it is funny how LSU seems to hire coaches who are great at recruiting and selling the university, yet can't coach X's and O's

Bonus! The player who was stuck with Johnny Jones

If you watched any LSU games this season, you were almost guaranteed unintentional comedy from the guy manning the Tigers sideline.

The decision for both Jordan Mickeyand Jarell Martin to turn pro has left many people miffed. Even former LSU great Shaq confidently told a local radio show the pair were not ready for the NBA.

However, it's possible their decisions lie in the simple fact that Johnny Jones is far from a master tactician. He's secured a tremendous recruiting class for 2015, including consensus No.1 Ben Simmons, but just because he can pick out the groceries doesn't mean he can cook.

Perhaps Mickey and Martin said ‘to hell with this' and decided they could improve their game at a faster pace under the watchful eyes of a more...um....respected basketball coach

Lol that does sum it up perfectly.

Great article, would read again

Examples of "bad X's and O's" please?

Sure I'd like better TO management at times and better intensity against lesser opponents (we lost several games we had no business losing). But people chant this "BAD X'S & O'S" mantra like a bodily function and it's straight up lazy.

I think most would agree that JJ isn't the best coach in America; however, you can't argue with the direction he's taken our program in only 3 years. We currently sit with the #1 recruiting class, he continues to attract quality assistants & his record has continued to improve.

And that's a fair point. My only concern is that when you look at the games, it's obvious that JJ makes really foolish mistakes in terms of coaching/management. It makes you wonder if what we saw this year is close to our ceiling. I hope to be wrong.

He has enough guards to beat three tournament teams on the road. And then you lose to 3 of the 4 SEC teams that played on Wednesday? And lose to one of them playing its 3rd game in 30 hours whe you're coming off the double bye? Damn frickin guards.

It is actually a good point if JJ doesn't win this season. He has no excuses anymore.

No it isn't. What do you consider winning? A National Championship? Final 4?

This guy could go say the same thing about Andrew/Aaron Harrison and Dakari Johnson who were all ranked ahead of Martin coming out of high school. I would say all 3 of them were pretty disappointing overall when it comes to their development. Out of high school the twins were ranked right behind Wiggins, Julius Randle, Aaron Gordon, and Jabari Parker and yet they have a late 2nd to undrafted grade right now.

Jones has had 2 McDonalds All-Americans that he has coached (O'Bryant and Martin) Martin will likely go in the 1st and Bryant went early 2nd.

O'Bryant went from:
8 to 13 to 15 PPG
.399% to .480% to .494% FG%
7 to 9 to 8 on RPG
And we can all agree that his defense improved between his last 2 seasons

Martin went from:
10 to 17 PPG
47% to 51%
27% to 33% from 3
4.6 rebs to 9 rebs

He can't, but you can't put that 100% on players either.

LSU is an easy target for stories like this, and really, it's the fan base's fault.

We bitch and moan about all of our coaches, and toss out the notion that all they do is recruit talent and not coach them up. Football, basketball, you name it- we have tons of people who just rail along with that theme.

So, some guy in New York (for example) easily can write an article about LSU- the coach can bring in top talent, but the team underperforms and the coach should be on the hot seat. The article seems to accurately describe the situation down here, because we all say it.

It's easy to do, and you can find it in a lot of cases.

Ohio St football- they get talent as good as any SEC team, and Coach Meyer wins wherever he's been.

Duke basketball- Coach K is never outcoached, and he brings in gifted athletes that rise to the occasion.

Kentucky basketball- phenomenal raw talent, but Calipari's team will struggle late against experienced teams when it comes to FT shooting, on the big stage.

Michigan St football and basketball- tough, gritty overperformers who won't beat themselves, and are defensively sound. Will fall to superior athletes.

Alabama football- big, strong guys who execute Saban's system. Methodical, smothering team, fully expects to win every time they step on the field.

It's what the fanbases say about themselves, and you just repeat it. Like I said, LSU fans will find any reason to be negative about the outlook, despite believing our teams have superior talent.

Probably unnecessarily harsh. However, until Jones produces results ON THE COURT these article are still going to be written. He's been a college HC for 15 years and has still yet to win a reg season conference championship or NCAAT game in his career. Every other coach in the SEC except Anderson (Mizzou) and Johnson (Bama) have done at least one of those things in their career. Anderson and Johnson have had their own measures of success at different levels.

Sorry, but the time for excuses are over. He may have the most talented roster he will ever have at LSU. While there are still some holes (most notably in the post), next year's roster has a good mix of proven experienced vets and highly talented young players (including the consensus best HS player in the country). With UK possibly a bit down for their lofty standards, there looks to be no dominant team in the SEC next year. There is NO REASON LSU should not be in the mix for the SEC title. Likewise, one and done in the NCAAT would be a complete disappointment.

CJJ can prove all the naysayers wrong next year or he can prove that he will never be able to get LSU to championship-level (even just conference). "Next year" is here.

I hope I'm wrong but I think the highest we'll see with Jones is a sweet 16 (possibly Elite 8). Again, I hope I'm wrong

The game moves quick, the coaching ability to manage all aspects of the game at such a fast pace intrigues me. Hard as hell to do. For example, there were times Jones would be peacefully squatting on the sideline watching/analyzing the game. Something would happen & Musseleman & crew would storm from his chair and raise hell.

Johnny wouldn't move.

According to some posters here, nothing is ever Jones' fault...or Miles...or Mainieri.

Jones can't be expected to get his team ready to play against inferior competition, make free throws, draw good inbounds plays, half court plays, cut down the turnovers, or make crisp passes. That's ALL on the players!!!

frick that piece of shite. We have one draftable player and we're supposed to be fricking unbeatable. The hate is fricking ridiculous. We had 5 scholarship players when JJ took over and he already has us in the NCAAT in year three. Beat more top 100 RPI teams then just about anyone, but our coach sucks. bullshite.

Absolutely. But the little blurb in the article basically hinted at Mickey and Martin leaving because of Jones. Which is fricking ludicrous.
