I think this makes sense for several reason. Maybe this team is better than we think? How well does this team hit lefties? Could be a match up for PM. Also, he doesn't throw hard so even with a weather delay he'd probably be back out there anyway. Early game we'll probably get most of it through before rain comes.

Poche also has a rough outing his first 1-2 innings almost every game it seems so best to let him clear out one of the weaker teams to gain confidence there? Maybe he feels like if a team like Rice jumped on Poche early it could be dangerous.

The starting line up they used in their tournament last week has one left-handed batter. I don't have their split stats.

They have a team batting average of .288.

They don't run a whole lot having stolen only 41 bases out of 64 attempts. Opponents have stolen 81 bases out of 107 attempts against them.

By contrast, LSU has stolen 89 bases on 127 attempts. So we have far more stolen bases than they have attempts.

Their season stats

It's a combination of Poche being a veteran and that this is not a particularly dominant LSU team that can steamroll anyone regardless of who we put out there on the mound.

No. This is not even remotely close. You pitch the sequence that gives you the best chance to win no matter how good your hitting is. The winner of the winners bracket is about 85% likely to win it all. So that means you win your first two games and you're the champ. Therefore, you pitch your two best pitchers in games 1 and 2. Since game 2 is the tougher competition, you pitch your top guy in game 2 and your 2nd guy in game 1.

CPM will go 2-1 in regionals until he retires. The only way he'll stray is if you have a bunch of lefties in the lineup of the 2 seed and your #2 pitcher is a lefty.

I absolutely disagree that you always throw your best 2 pitchers in the first 2 games of a regional. Heck PM doesn't even do this most of the time. The vast majority of host throw their 3 or even a 4 against the four seed. We just don't have a 3rd starter with a good enough track record to trust right now. This is out of necessity not because it is how PM wants to set it up.

Really? Name one that has put together a couple of good starts in a row where they pitched more than 4 innings. We have some guys who are close to stepping up but still haven't taken the role.

Paul Mainieri doesn't usually go 2-1. He usually throws 3 or wholestaff in the opener of a hosted regional. This is out of character for him.

Starters in the opener of home regionals:

2008 Jordan Brown
2009 Austin Ross
2012 Aaron Nola
2013 Ryan Eades
2014 Jared Poche
2015 Alden Cartwright

He's only thrown the number two guy once (2013) and you could argue it was because Eades was really struggling at the end of the year.

You're off here. Mainieri doesn't normally pitch his number 2 guy in game 1. But I felt he would do it here and it's the right move in my opinion. As good as this team has been, it has had spurts of struggling to piece together hits and runs. For that reason and the inexperience of our staff, that is probably why he is going with Poche.

Yep PM almost never goes this route not sure why people think this is his normal plan. With that said i like it for this team. I would have liked Gilbert getting a chance too. I'm an easy fan to please ha.

What if Poche is the 3rd starter?

PM was going to throw Smith in G2 against Florida.

Am I in the Flash thread.

Good points. For many of our hitters, it's their first action starting in the NCAA tournament so their could be 1st time jitters. With a young team that's had up and down moments particularly with mid week level opponents, PM's throwing Poche sends a message that we mean business and aren't taking UVU lightly. I expect the move will focus the team.

Are you insinuating the Sunday starter who was 7-4 that year was one of the top 2 arms over the Saturday starter Ryan Eades?
