This "distinction," which a lot of tiger fans seem to be proud of, is actually devastating to the foundation of both the offense and defense. I don't know why people make such a big deal outta of this, when in essence, it kills us.
I completely agree. It looks good when talking to an 18 year old you are recruiting, but it will catch up to you on the field. I think you start to see more players stay with the NFL limiting the number of draft flyers that can be put out on underclassmen.

there are projections of us finishing LAST in the SECW
Would it really be surprising if every team in the SECW finished this season with 4-3 or 3-4 division record? The difference between first and last in the division this year is as razor thin as it has ever been. The last place team in the SECW this year might very well be the 7th best team in the nation. Don't get wrapped around the axle.

If you followed recruiting just a little you'd know the answer to this question is NO.

NO!
we're young and the SEC West is good from top to bottom.

I dont think it's the early departures. I think it's player development...and the emergence of a true competition for elite talent. When MSU is able to recruit and train what is the best D-line in the SEC you might have a problem.
Surely you aren't saying LSU isn't developing talent. You think all of the early departures are in the NFL because LSU has a problem developing talent?

No.
Tenn. doesnt have the natural talent to chose from each year.
LSU keeps recruiting fence up, LSU is fine ... whomever is at the helm.

No, Recruiting is what did Fulmer in.
His 2008 class was ranked 35th.
As long as Miles does not frick up recruiting, we will not be another Tennessee.

Does that mean we can sign 36 recruits for 2016?
Posted on 10/3/14 at 11:14 am to LaLSUatheart
No. The big difference is Tennessee high school football is nowhere near the level of Louisiana. As long as we get the majority of the players we want from in state, we will be fine. Tennessee had to recruit nationally, and that is hard to sustain for a long period of time.

Your friend is wrong about why UT declined. UT fell off the map because they depend on national recruiting, without much in-state talent. The state talent they do have is mostly around Memphis, which is split between Ole Miss/ UM/Arkansas/ and UT supporters.
During UT's golden years, they were able to take advantage of other programs being down, (like LSU, Ole Miss, Georgia,Bama, i believe auburn was on probation around that time) and UT was able to cherry pick those states. Now that recruits have good options to remain in their home states, UT isnt able to poach the top talent.
LSU may or may not decline, but it wont be because of lacking in state talent.

Is LSU on the Path of Tennessee?
quote:If 2-3 years ago, someone would have listed all the players who would leave early, where would you predict LSU to finish? Would you think we'd even be competitive?
I am not relying on my concerns just on the MSU loss, but there are projections of us finishing LAST in the SECW. Who in the world would have imagined this 2-3 years ago?
And yet, at the end of the season when all-conference lists are released, we're probably going to sweep the freshman team. That's probably the biggest indicator of decline vs future success; LSU's future looks very bright.

Good points.....NoCal kids have been going to Oregon, Boise and Washington. Carolina kids have been staying and they are not dipping in to Louisiana like before.

I guess we can put Oregon in that class now, right? They lost at home to an inferior team.
Oregon lost to that same inferior team last year too.

I don't have a crystal ball, but I think this year is more of an adjustment or recalibration phase, and we'll get back on track soon. To predict likely future performance, look at current recruiting. Freshmen like Harris, LF, Dupre, Quinn, Brumfield, Clapp, Garrett, Adams, D. Clark, Battle, Paris, etc, do not signal a coming decline. The 2015 class may not be as top heavy, but it looks like it will be solid. And 2016 could be an all-time class.
As for this notion we have to start convincing most underclassmen to stay through their senior years, I disagree. That train left the station a long time ago, and it's not likely to come back. Instead, the focus needs to be on consistently recruiting well and developing the talent you sign, so that when guys leave early as they inevitably will, you have talent ready to step up and take their place.

I think the decline at Tenn was on Fulmer's watch and began before Kiffin/Dooley ever set foot on campus. UTenn's run through the 90's (and into the 21st century) was very impressive.
Bama, UGA, and SC (all regular opponents for them) were not as strong in the 90's as they are now. Conversely, UF was a force then. Minus UF, seemed like they went undefeated almost every year.
One of the big things not mentioned was when Cutcliff went to OM. That hurt.
I don't thik Les has quite found the happy equilibrium bewteen players leaving early, staying on top in recruiting, and player development.

The difference between us and UT is that we are in a talent rich state and keep reloading after we lose a lot of big time playes for us. And UT did that, but when Fulmer was done, they didnt. And thats because the state of Tenn doesnt consistently put out the number of legit college football prospects like we do. I mean the state of LA puts the most players in the NFL per capita. We have big time recruits every single year. And no in state school to compete with. UT had to get their players from other states, mostly in the southern states like Georgia, Florida, Alabama, etc. And they have to recruit against those states schools.
As long as we keep getting majority of the in state kids, we will be fine.

You mean with the possibility of us getting rid of a great coach with pie in the sky ideas and getting stuck with a string of losers?
Possibly.
