I recall a conversation with an ex Tn. football player last year, who is a football coach and a friend of mine. I asked him what was the real basis of how Tn. fell so hard so quickly. He said the problem was due to what LSU is seeing now-- way too many underclassmen leaving early at key positions. He thought LSU was on the same path. I really like our young guys and there is no doubt they have elite talent, but we do have to find a way to keep the majority of our talent for 4 years. There is no substitute for experience and maturity especially on the D line. Leading the NCAA in early NFL departures may be helping in the short term with recruiting, but is it hurting in the long run?

We aren't in the UT - K decline, no

Playing in the SECW has a TON to do with it

Tennessee stopped getting elite talent at some point and it dragged on for several seasons in a row. That has not happened at LSU and I do not see it happening at any point in the future.

I dont think it's the early departures. I think it's player development...and the emergence of a true competition for elite talent. When MSU is able to recruit and train what is the best D-line in the SEC you might have a problem.

If we wernt recruiting top 5 classes or even top 20 classes then i would be worried. But we are staying in the top of recruiting, so no worries.

Using all the recent draft picks as a recruiting tool is a double edged sword. If you have a class that doesnt pan out quickly, for whatever reason, and they take time to develop then you are looking at 1 year of production from them. That's not good enough to stay relevant.

exactly. tenn does not have much in state talent wise and relied on invading other states. when La, AL, Ga, etc piplines closed, their decline was real.

No, not even close. We lose one game and our fanbase absolutely melts.

I guess we can put Oregon in that class now, right? They lost at home to an inferior team.

I am not relying on my concerns just on the MSU loss, but there are projections of us finishing LAST in the SECW. Who in the world would have imagined this 2-3 years ago?

Mass early departures are a big problem for us, but they have nothing to do with us going the Tennessee route. With the Vols, Fulmer started going downhill, the talent dropped, and then they made some really bad hires.

No. Tenn's decline happened because of their inability to recruit and develop top tier talent.
Then they hired a parade of dipshits at HC.

I think the problem is that more schools finally caught up to us. In years past, you never had to worry about the Mississippi schools and Auburn was never a consistent elite program.

It was also a process hiring two very shitty coaches back to back

Tennessee ran off a damn good coach, then replaced him with two goof balls.

Let's don't overthink this

If you followed recruiting just a little you'd know the answer to this question is NO.

This "distinction," which a lot of tiger fans seem to be proud of, is actually devastating to the foundation of both the offense and defense. I don't know why people make such a big deal outta of this, when in essence, it kills us.
