Once he works on his deep ball timing he could be highly productive.

Mauck, Flynn....

Mauck made plenty mistakes. We had the game one against UGA in 03 when he three an INT in the UGA side of the field with only a few minutes left. He came back and hit Green for a TD to win.

He also funbled the second play of the NCC on the OU goaline.

Flynn made many mistakes too. I remember 3 turnovers against Bama in 07.

Etling will be great next year. He was a welcomed improvement this year. I think we beat Wisky with him as a starter.

Etling ain't Mauck. On that we agree
That's the entire premise of the OP. I can see him getting to that level next year.

as I recall Mauck had a stellar Peach Bowl his junior year when starter was injured (Jamarcus)

Etling has more poise than any of our recent quarterbacks. He has decent pocket awareness, is harder to panic and makes fewer catastrophic mistakes. He's better at making plays that keep drives alive rather than choking or panicking in critical situations. The team also seems to responds better to his on field leadership.

Is he as good athletically as Harris -- no -- but he doesn't get that "deer in headlights" look and fall apart either. I think he will do well in Coach Canada's system this spring and fall and and be ready for next season.

He also probably was not getting as many reps in the spring and summer due to Harris being ahead of him. So I am also expecting a big improvement. Hopefully they focus on throwing the ball down the field.

Just minor improvement would be excellent. He's already a very good QB. Give him just half of the passes Dupre dropped and whole different perception.
DE says that 0/Canada should hire an experienced WR Coach that actually played the position in College/NFL and can teach the finer aspects of the position, like actually catching the football, running precise routes and blocking. That aint being done currently..................

Dude forget the stats........if you cant see the difference in our offensive production with Etling in over Harris then you are just blind. Its not even close. We set records on offense almost every game he was the qb this year. With Harris we were lucky to break the huddle.
Etling is "Light Years" advanced over Harris in the all-important "Quick Information Processing" skills.

DE can also stand in front of a broad Barn and hit it with a football, as well as being able to throw a football into Lake Pontchartrain while standing at one of the Crossover's on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway.................

If Etling is indeed the started next year, i predict he is draft worthy by the end of 2017. He's got good football IQ and a decent arm. With Canada as his QB coach there should be a BIG jump in his ability next year.

I expect Etling to be replaced. LSU should have a playmaker at QB. Etling is just all kinds of average.

LSU fans see average QB play and are content with having just that. What has Etling showed to say he will be much better? His average arm talent, his mediocre accuracy, his athleticism of just being good enough to evade in the pocket and pick up the occasional 3-5 yards?

I love what Harris, Scott, and Brennan bring to the table as far as talent, goes. Etling hasn't done enough to keep his spot. Hopefully a competition is started in the offseason and if it needs to continue into the first 2 games of the season, then it definitely should.

Don't forget Mauck throwing a pick six right off the bat in the '03 Ole Miss game.

This is not shite all over Mauck time, but to illustrate that Mauck/Flynn were not necessarily heads and shoulders over Etling.

It could be also said that Mauck/Flynn had much better OL and receivers as an advantage.

Would you mind adding
Total passing yards per game
Total yards per game (including rushing)
Avg score per game
Avg "3 and outs" per game

Try plotting these stats week-by-week. My guess is that you'd see declining trends for Harris and a flat trend line for Etling.

People forget that Flynn was nothing special until about halfway through his senior year when the light came on. Learning to play qb takes game experience. If Etling can make a similar improvement he will be very good.

There's something to be said for this.... compared to consistent implosions and panic attacks. Etling settles the entire team and instills confidence.

Eitling is tough, and his teammates know it, respond to it, and feed and thrive off of it...He is going to have a break out senior year from the get go, and he is finally going to be able to use all his weapons in the ways they were given their talents by God to use...

Eitling turns heads in '18....

Stats for a QB should focus on ball advancement, as that indicates how a QB can move the ball down the field, without turnovers and 3-and-outs, and scoring drives. All these other stats do not give adequate insight.

I think so too, but part of my thinking is the hiring of Canada. I heard the former QB at Northern Illinois (the team that upset Bama) describe Canada's system as "Quarterback friendly", and if the players "buy into his system, trust him, they will be very successful".
