That's true, but Dunn was the bigger recruiter in terms of national stature and offers.

dunn left after his mother's death and thought it was in his best interest to leave his situation of neighborhood+peers. dunn was minor's mentor, so, put 2 and 2 together. also, fsu was much bigger of a brand in the late 90's than in 92-93. the biggest catholic miss behind dunn, imo, was major applewhite.

The fact that CHS never won a state title in the 90's with the ridiculous talent is baffling. Got to the State title once and was promptly destroyed by the #2 ranked team in the country in 1990. But 1996 was the best team CHS ever fielded, including a national player of the year at running back and Applewhite at QB. They were even ranked #10 in the country at one point as they started 13-0 before losing to West Monroe 21-14. Tommy Banks ran for over 200 yards and 3 touchdowns on CHS that day. I was in 8th grade too, which is the grade most kids (at that time anyway) idolized the CHS football team the most.

I remember FSU sending Charlie Ward down to a couple of CHS games too. I was on the FSU bandwagon at that time, still have my Warrick Dunn jersey too.

Don't know how I missed it, but I had no idea Major Applewhite went to CHS.

Greg Brown too (assuming you are a UT-Austin fan). He was in Major's class and was all-state at cornerback. He went to UT-Austin too. I think he ended up playing safety. He was one of Applewhite's primary receivers at CHS too.

Every once in a while I'll think about if lsu could've closed the fence in the 90's. Think about Peyton Manning, Warrick Dunn, Reggie Wayne, Ed Reed, Kordell Stewart, etc.

Don't forget LSU signed Rohan Davey and Craig Nall the year that they "missed" on Applewhite.

With these two comitted were they really interested in Applewhite?

That is unequivocally false. He was certainly a good prospect, but Warrick was the prospect every school was after.
Ehhhh. I think Franklin was the bigger deal

^ Marshall Faulk

The talent that left the state was staggering in the 90s.

I think the Dunn situation was that Franklin and the other running backs they signed at about the same time meant it would have been a crowded backfield. Didn't Curly sign a Fab 4 of running backs one year?

Plus as others have said FSU was a hot school back then and not that far from BR. It was so sad when his mom was killed I was at LSU back then. I also thought he might be more likely to stay in BR but he made the right choice for him.

But Curley did have good players. He did recruit talent. There are a lot of guys who played for him that went to the NFL like Chuck Wiley, Denard Walker, Tori James, Wade Richey, Kevin Mawai, and so on. It wasn't recruiting for Curley. He just couldn't get the wins on the field. If Curley had a few interceptions dropped or kicks missed by other teams things would have worked out differently for LSU football.

Getting to a gator or peach bowl would have given him a few more years and then Dinardo, Saban, and Miles might have never happened.

I don't care how tall that fence is, the Manning's could get over it faster than a Mexican. No way in hell LSU ever had a shot at Peyton even if they have won consecutive titles. Mannings hate LSU.

At best this is a dumb joke, at worst stupid and false. I know him personally and he does NOT hate LSU.

Peyton was Ole miss all the way until Cooper got hurt. Then he opened up his options. UT was an up and coming program at the time and a good fit for him.

But you're right, he was never coming to LSU.

(especially to sit behind Josh Booty. )

I'm pretty sure with what happened to Warrick Dunn's mom, it may have been best for him to be elsewhere.

This. If there is one recruit i was glad to see go elsewhere it was Dunn.

didnt forget about them. i dont how must ineterest we had. i just remember watching highlights of catholic to see minor. i was always drawn to that little skinny redheaded qb that seemed to make play after play. we probably didnt show much interest, as we were also heavily recruiting kenny kelly out of tampa. i use the term "miss" lightly.

LSU was not an attractive destination at that time.

Major actually wanted to go to Alabama really badly, if memory serves, but they didn't want him. At least he got to coach there for one year as their offensive coordinator in Saban's first year. I guess he didn't like it very much. I hope he gets to be a head coach soon, though he is still just in his 30's.
