LSU wasn't very good at time
Coaching staff at didn't think the instate kids were a priority

This is one of the reasons a number of people want the fence up and was the start of securing the boarders.

I was in school at the time and remember that you didn’t know which one was better, but every team wanted both Dunn & Franklin. Franklin was a Parade All American. Dunn's mom was murdered about a month before signing day making a deposit at a bank late at night. Bowden swept in and played like he was his Father and that was what won him over. He needed something in his life, but at same time, many wondered how he could leave his other family members behind.

Questions like this come up from time to time and it illustrates why their are so many people on this board that bitch about everything like we've always been an elite program.

Went to middle school with Brown's older brother(Will). Their mother was a teacher at Southeast Middle School...passed away at an early age from cancer...super nice lady.

And it's Boudreaux

Dunn was a no brainer.
LSU was awful at that time and FSU was the it place to be.

Minor was a little different in that LSU had a shot but following Dunn was an easy call and LSU was loaded at that position at that time with Faulk and Mealey and TD Tommy Banks!

We also got Robert Toomer, Robert Davis, Jay Johnson, Artie Moore, and David Butler along with Franklin. We were STACKED at RUNNING BACK!!!!!!!!! Dunn obviously knew he would likely play in between Butler and Moore.

Both BR guys at Catholic High and LSU missed on them. I know LSU wasn't the school to be at at this time and FSU was hot.
Did they even consider LSU? Did FSU have some ties at Catholic High at that time? Just curious what went on with their recruitment.

Reading this thread reminded me of Leroy Hoard, another LA running back that LSU missed out on (He went to Michigan and played 10 years in NFL for Browns and Vikings). I googled his name and ran across this sobering article detailing the difficulties he has had with post concussion syndrome. Dude says he has purposely never purchased a gun to ensure that he does not commit suicide with it.

He left because too many people had attitudes like you. If LSU had actually recruited Peyton Manning, Bucky Richardson, Brock Berlin, Brad Banta, Ike Hilliard, etc. instead of taking an attitude that "there's no way they'd ever sign with LSU," then many of them would have signed. I think LSU actually backed off of a lot of Parade All-Americans in that era figuring that there was no chance of landing them.

But back in the late '80s/early '90s LSU had a lot of difficulty keeping in-state players for other reasons too. The oil-based economy was rough in the state while everywhere else was booming under Reaganomics. The local NAACP head ridiculously accused Archer of being racist, which may have scared away some black players. Richard Condon thought that Curley's southern accent scared off inner-city black recruits as well. Also, during that time, the New Orleans Times Picayune was very anti-LSU. With no Internet available yet, the only source for LSU updates for New Orleans recruits was from that LSU-bashing publication.

Applewhite was pretty under the radar. Even Texas tried to bench him but he kept playing his way back on the field.
