Cam will open it up a bit as the season progresses but probably not as much as some would like. He's always carefully managed risk/reward with his young QBs. He did it with Philip Rivers and then Flacco. He isn't going to out them in position to massively fail in an effort to hyper speed their progress. Too many coaches do that to young QBs. Cam doesn't and it pays off in the long run, although it can be frustrating at times.

Good stuff.

I think I speak for everyone....feel free to do more analysis like this play, especially as it relates to our QB development. I enjoyed your breakdown.

I think our offense will be good in time, I think we'll have a lot more neutral down passes as Jennings/Harris mature throughout the season and more and more trust is earned by our QBs. It was the right move IMO in game1 to take things slow and let some of the nerves die down in the first quarter/half. We were kinda running Into a brick wall in the first half for the most part, but that was the right way to do it. If Jennings is as far along and "ahead of the game" as you described and showed for this instance, then there is great reason for optimism and hopes of a really good season.

I'm excited. Hopefully everyone else is as well.

Only throes I didn't like from AJ were the screen tosses.

Otherwise, he improved in 2nd Half and made some nice throws.

Good post, I think Harris needs to play against these next two and not just hand the ball off. I realize he looked lost and the OL didn't even get his first play call. He needs to get comfortable for insurance and his own development.

Jennings has progressed no doubt. Agree that spin move should not become a crutch, sometimes stepping up in pocket is preferred. His arm isn't bad when he uses it but still puts too much air under the ball at times. He is getting better.

OP - how dare you bring informative, rational analysis to the Rant.

I think you're right about the coaches playing it close to the vest with the passing game, but it's not just about limiting Jenning's mistakes. When he throws to a spot, the receiver had damn well better run the right route, or you'll get an easy interception.

Jennings played well but u boys are giving up too quick on Harris. He is learning the position. High school & college are a big difference. Also the new rb didn't look to good either. Both will improve.

Great breakdown of the play.

I'm surprised you have time to do this, with the Fappening happening and all.

I actually have a lot of confidence in this offense. Big question is... Will CC open up the playbook, take chances, and give this offense a shot at being great?

It will come slowly and there will be growing pains for sure. But gradually the offense will expand.

I like the Rant and all but this is the kind of thread that I loke to hop into...

First, I have always said that it is better for a college offense to pick a handful of plays and do them nearly perfectly. That OC we had from '07 and '08 tried to get them to do so many that they mastered nothing. Also, while one of the young QBs was setting all time NCAA records for pick 6's, the other one (you know the one) was becoming so afraid to throw a pick that when he did start he could trust no one. He had future NFL receivers but could only throw to them after they had separation or after they had beated the DB on fly routes and he still threw the ball 5 yds to far.

Back to the happy things about Tiger FB. After watching Mett throw to his rec's back shoulders and seeing the trust that he had in his two top WR's. I remembered what it took to have a passing game again. Thank goodness that Jennings is capable of doing some of those things right now and thus he will do more of them and do them better as he goes forward. I trust in CCC and it does look like he is in the middle of rewriting LSU's offensive legacy while we watch.

I really don't think that Les would play a RB who couldn't block. I'll bet that LF has been working on blocking more than he did at carrying the ball.

As for throwing the ball five yards down the field on third and 8... There is a HUGE/ENORMOUS difference between throwing that ball after the receiver has finished a hook route and throwing the ball so that it will get to that spot a moment after the rec turns around to catch it so that he can evade that CB for a few more yards and a first down. Watching that old QB play was an exercise in anger management half of the time.

Indeed, it seems like we both see this the same way. I put a lot of weight in the "Well coached" theory. The offense and the staff were all in some kind of voodoo trance for some reason while every other team was enjoying an offense that could do these things to varying degrees of success.

Things will get even better from now on though. I truly believe that and it is mainly because3 of Cam and the staff. Jennings wont be here very long but the happiness will continue after he leaves.

Wow great job by Magee. He recognized the blitz, but had a bad angle on the LB but slowed him down enough to allow Jennings to throw.

but there is nothing that shows that Diarse isn't the first read.

that's definitely possible, yeah. i don't want to give the wrong impression, I don't have any inside knowledge about the playbook or anything like that.

basically my brother and I just sat on the phone yesterday for about 4 hours going frame by frame on the offense to try and finally figure out why we do some of the things we do. that wasn't our plan, it just sort of happened because I don't have a girlfriend right now and he has two young kids and this was an excuse to lock the door to his office all afternoon.

so, yes, I'm pretty much just surmising based on the entire play, on everyone involved, on how it started, how it finished, how players react to changes, etc. and yes, "surmising" is just a grandiose way of saying "guessing".

If you look at the 3rd and Goal play that was going to Dural, when he was covered, Jennings had nowhere to go so he just ran with it.

I was hoping to see him try to find someone else there. Hopefully, he will build on the good.
