Having a bad game doesn't make one "bad in coverage". The WR Mills was covering against TCU had 0 catches on the night and Mills had a pick in that game. If you think Mills is bad in coverage you have no clue what you are talking about.
He may not be bad, but he's not as good as what we need for our best cb. That pick was more of a bad pass than a good pick. It's still early, though.

Too bad the one from UAB blew right past him for one.

Oh no, he gave up a long pass play. He sucks. He should never play at LSU.

Typical tard LSU fan response.

He may not be our best anymore - that doesn't make him bad in coverage. He isn't even close to being bad in coverage.

Pressure is on the DBs to step up or step back...the youngsters are hungry to play...and next year will not get any easier...

I think Mills will be fine.

Yes, this is trending towards a smaller defense right now. I think Welter will be replaced.

I think Beckwith will play mostly DE, not LB.

I think Kwon, Lamin, Tahj, LLouis, Debo will see most of the snaps.

We are also going to be light at the other CB spot because of the freshmen that will likely bump Collins a lot for playing time.

We all know Chavis will never sacrifice speed for size. What I think he's trying to do now is find that right mix of aggressiveness, ability to shed blocks, and ability to recognize the play. The young guys are better than some of the older guys at all of that except the latter. That will take time.

LSU is gearing up, imo, to beat A&M with speed and aggressiveness. They will take their chances with Bama this year with that "light" defense against Bama's traditional offense because LSU's offense has a better chance at keeping pace than in years past. Just my opinion.

Not sure about TCU, but he didn't start UAB. Tahj, Welter and Barrow started I think

btw, it'd be interesting to do a side-by-side comparison of weights between this current lineup vs 2012's defense.

and also between the fan "ideal" lineup (Kwon, etc.) vs 2012's defense.

I'd do it, but I'm too busy making OT-type money.

For the record, I'm not going to add any insight to this thread other than to say, WAY TO frickING GO!

These are the type threads I like to read when discussing LSU football. I'm not smart enough to really contribute X's and O'x analysis, but love to read this type stuff.

Way to go Big Ed! We need more threads like this.

No, you're response is a typical homo love affair with a player that isn't that good.

Sorry.

hell, last yr's starters at LB weren't "ideal". lotta ppl wanted Debo at the Sam spot instead of Louis (after Muncie and Kwon went down). but Chavis likes his young guys to learn one spot first before moving them around, and Debo's been at Will only.

Thanks for the summary. I would almost have preferred that the onus lay on the DE's. The explanation furnished by Gordy implicates lax play in several layers of our defense. It's not particularly encouraging when the LB's, CB's, and safeties are all making repeated errors. It indicates that we will be exceedingly vulnerable against good teams who put pressure on those very positions. For example, Gurley will rampage if we don't fill properly, take appropriate angles, and tackle.

I also had a chance to review the tape, not game film, but DVR, and I can agree with him on most counts there.

However, there is no way I can give Rasco a full pass. He has repeatedly lost contain, getting sucked inside of his own volition. Don't get me wrong, he has made plays, too. But, I have more confidence in Allen right now, in so far as containment goes.

I went into this season feeling really good that Rasco would hold down one spot. I feel that way about Allen now, and I'm looking for one of the younger guys to eventually grab the other spot, with Rasco and the rest sharing time.

Mills had his worst game in an LSU uniform Sat. night. I think Martin missed every tackle he attempted, even on the rare occasion he took the right angle. And he also showed no closing speed on over the top coverage. His spot is barely more secure than Collins', IMO.

Containment is a major issue right now for this LSU team. The best looking LB'er so far, Kwon Alexander, has actually looked good playing more like an inside guy. He's reading the run well and reacting without hesitation, never allowing containment to become an issue.

Right now, this team will get gashed by offenses like Auburn, Ole Miss, and A&M. That's why I'm so excited about the Kent St. game, and the opportunity to see guys play their way into the lineup. Unfortunately, Kent St. isn't the perfect team to iron all of our defensive issues out, and we'll see some of that occur the following Saturday.

This D is slooooow to diagnose plays and plays unsure of themselves in the back 7.

Agree with much of your analysis. Unfortunately, the performance against Kent State will tell us little of value. Conversely, the Auburn offense will be a meaningful test of the defense's ability to defend the corner.

Lost in all of this thoughtful assessment of our containment problems is that fact that we have also been gashed up the middle from time to time. Of course, that might also be attributable to lackluster LB and safety play.

Name calling and ad homieim attacks are usually the signs of someone that has not done thoughtful analysis and doesn't understand what he is watching and just lashes out because he doesn't like a player or because the player gave up a bad play.
