Gordy Rush defensive film breakdown RE: losing contain

Well, this is not a transcript. It's my attempt to paraphrase his detailed report on Tiger Zone last night for those who missed it.
We can all watch the games 400 times, but like you know, without the wide angle coaches tape, it's impossible to properly identify what's really happening.
For starters, Gordy said it is NOT our de's who are messing up. Opponents have seen a weakness on film and are exploiting our young guys (duh).
On the plays we lose contain, receivers are "cracking back" on our de's. So basically our de's get blindsided into a double team and the ball carrier gets the edge.
From there is is the responsibility of the olb to fill the vacated space around the DE to force the play back inside. Our olbs are misreading this play most of the time.
Also, sometimes they crack back on the de AND the olb. On those plays it's the safeties and corners who have to fill the vacated space.
We all see how soft Collins was at doing this. Gordy also said Martin and Thompson have filled in on these plays horribly.
So blame the linebackers and safeties and Collins. The de's are performing.
As an aside, he said kwon is the only linebacker that's been playing this right. Even barrow has been messing it up.

Good stuff. I felt the DL was aggressive before I read this. Good to know we just have soft LBs.

Devil's advocate here:
Is it possible for the DE's to get off the block(s) and still make a play? I dont believe any of them should get a free pass. Not the DE, LB, or DB's.

Does the defense just seem small to anyone? Watching the other night, it just seemed like our guys were smaller than usual and were not taking up space. Maybe part of that is not having the LBs fill the holes and not seeing the pursuit that we are used to. Instead of swarming to the ball, plays are made, but it is by one or two guys instead of a handful of them.
I know that we haven't given up over 300 yards yet, but the defense just seems to be a lot smaller, slower, and weaker than we are used to seeing. What Gordy is saying here could be part of the reason why.
Maybe it is just guys being unsure of themselves and where they are supposed to be.

Pretty obvious who needs to start at LB.
Kwon: best LB on roster
Barrow: 2nd best on roster; has good size
T Jones: very fast and has tons of exp
L Louis should be first in, with D Jones as replacement for T Jones when he comes out. Beckwith should also play. All of the others should only play if there are injuries.

Maybe over aggressive but not really too small, at least to my view. I don't understand how, if a wide receiver moves towards the defensive end or linebacker to crack back block, the defensive back doesn't move up immediately to take over outside position. Could it be that the backs are actually following the receivers down the line too closely resulting in a bad angle once the back goes outside? I would think that this is something that can be easily corrected if that is the case.

So far this season, the LB's have been almost non-existent! Hopefully with more games under their belts we will be ready for the SEC.

It's almost impossible for the defensive end to make that play on a crack back if the WR is good. The linebackers just need to read and fill better

What seems obvious to me is that our corners hesitate and in doing so take bad angles so their fate is sealed by a speed back. Or, it is the corners who can't get off the block or at least turn the play in.

Rewatched the UAB game last night
Collins and Mills are bad in coverage and take terrible angles
Loston took several bad angles, giving up 1st downs when he had the RB dead to right behind the LOS
Tahj and kwon were beasting. Barrow looked good too.
DJ welter is the weak link and can't shed blocks, is slow, and generally takes himself out of plays.

Having a bad game doesn't make one "bad in coverage". The WR Mills was covering against TCU had 0 catches on the night and Mills had a pick in that game. If you think Mills is bad in coverage you have no clue what you are talking about.

Good analysis by Gordy and by the comments...nothing to argue with on this post...and I agree with the suggested starting LBs...Kwon, Barrow, Jones...seems like a no-brainer to me...
