re: Former LSU QB Buddy Lee Died

He was injured in the 2nd half against Ole Miss in 69. Ole Miss mad a great comeback to win while he was out. That was the closet Charlie Mac came to a Nat'l Championship. They were unofficially invited to play a 10-0 Texas in the Cotton Bowl (which was how it was done then). When Notre Dame broke its long standing ban on playing in Bowl games, the Cotton Bowl dumped LSU, and Texas easily beat Notre Dame to claim the National Championship.
Ever wonder why Charlie Mac had Bert Jones throwing a TD pass against Notre Dame on the last play of the game when LSU was up by 13 points. That's why.

RIP Buddy Lee. I remember him well from my early years as a Tiger fan.

First play of the game - Buddy Lee pitched to Jimmy Gilbert who threw a halfback pass to Andy Hamilton for a TD.
Still have the program from that game. Buddy's picture is in it.
RIP Tiger....
I was at that game too, a rare day game... It was a shock to see a team under Scooter Purvis run a halfback pass, especially on the first play of the game. But it worked and those were the winning points at the end.
Rest In Peace Buddy, we're always with you.

Buddy Lee was one of those Tiger greats who quietly and without drama, led LSU out of adversity (Butch Duhe's death) to high levels of achievement- SEC Champs and Orange Bowl.

Buddy and Jimmy were both right handers. Mike Hillman was the southpaw from that era.
Thank you BillF, I knew there was a lefty in the mix somewhere or other!!! Getting too old to remember things.

This is correct and LSU should never choose the Cotton Bowl over any near equal bowl ever.

He was the QB at the first LSU game I ever attended. I remember my old folks from up in Zachary thought the sun rose and set on Buddy.

RIP Buddy.
I watched him play and yes, he was a big part of Tiger football during that era.

He was a tough player and athlete. I had the opportunity to have played against him in a few pick up basketball games and he was an excellent athlete as well as a person from my time around him. RIP.

Just as a side note, Buddy took over at QB after starter Butch Duhe suddenly died. He was good and I remember his play in the Orange Bowl. If he had not gotten injured in the 2nd half we would have probably won. Instead, an inexperienced Bert Jones replaced him, and didn't do bad, but losing Lee affected the team's momentum.
Good solid player; perfect for running the rush-first I-formation offense of Cholly Mac. That 1970 team was a true-what-if team. They opened the season with a last-play-of-the-game hail Mary pass loss to aTm. Later they missed two makeable field goals in a 3-0 loss on the road to a powerful ND team. After easily winning the SEC they were ranked in the top 7 and lost to MNC NEbraska on a last minute score. A healthy Lee might well have pulled that game out. R.I.P. Buddy. Condolences to his family.

Yep, I talk to Coach McClendon about it at the LSU vs Fla. game. Bill" Arnsparger's first. He said the Cotton Bowl committee lied to him. He said they would have gone to the Sugar Bowl had the Cotton even hinted about waiting on N.D.

Scooter Purvis coached defensive backs. Charlie Peavey was the offensive coordinator. You're right, though. It was rare to see that with Peavey at the controls. I talked to Jimmy Gilbert's dad the night before the game, and he told me what the first play would be. I somehow forgot about it, but then recalled it as soon as he took the pitch. Great play, great game.

Cholly Mac's pride notwithstanding, I'm sure had he known we were going to get screwed over, he would have kicked the tying FG against Ole Miss for a 26-26 tie and a 9-0-1 season. There's no way the Cotton would have passed on 2 unbeaten teams.
Ole Miss at 6-3-1 would have gone to the Bluebonnet or Peach, and Arkansas would have played ND in the Sugar....

I was just a boy, but I remember him. 69 and 70 were LSUs best teams until the 80s at least.

Even with the loss to Ole Miss y'all do realize the Sugar Bowl offered LSU an invitation before they offered Ole Miss, right? LSU tried to play the Sugar like the Cotton did LSU. The loss to Ole Miss sunk any NC hopes as even before that game LSU was only #8. Thanks,Buddy for your wonderful LSU career and prayers to the family.
Here he is in the 1970 win at Auburn, when LSU won 17-9.
With that said, 67 is no "kid" but darn, that's way too young for him to pass away.

Dang....I grew down the street from his sister and nephew in Zachary. He was a good guy. Sorry to hear this.

Small correction...it was Paul Lyons who threw the final TD against ND in '71.Andy Hamilton completely turned Clarrnce Ellis around on the throw.
That said, prayers sent to the Lee family and friends. That was a great era of Tiger football and Buddy Lee was a big part of it. Always hate to see someone of his age go...mainly because I'm the same age !
