I was just thinking. IT might have been Hillman that was left handed. Buddy Lee could have been right handed. I know Gilbert was right handed. It's been a long time, I was a teenager.

Jimmy was moved from QB to Safety at LSU and played a lot on defense. He did come in as a halfback and threw a touchdown pass against Auburn to win the game at the end. I was there in the stands.

Are you talking about the '69 LSU-Auburn game?
Because Jimmy Gilbert did throw a halfback pass to Andy Hamilton of about 50 yards for a touchdown, but it was on the first play from scrimmage.
George Bevan and Bill Thomason blocked Auburn's potential tying extra point late in the fourth quarter to preserve a 21-20 LSU victory.
This was my first game as a little Tiger - October 25, 1969.

The best LSU team that didn't get a chance to play for the national title.

Because they were snubbed by the Cotton Bowl, the team declined to go to a bowl game. Tennessee ended up SEC Champion, and Texas had to come from behind to beat Notre Dame, who had just ended their self-imposed bowl moratorium for that season.

That was as big as screwin' LSU ever received until bowl selection after the 2011 season.

True enough Ace, Tigers were screwed both times. I remember the AUB game as a boy. It was one of about three on TV that year. Very sweet to destroy Archie's team the next year in the revenge game.

I remember him--a steady, if unspectacular, stay-in-the-pocket QB.

We could use a guy like Buddy Lee right now.

Dec. 5, 1970 on ABC PrimeTime. Chris Schenkel and Lee Grosscup. LSU 61-17.
LSU set NCAA record for punt return yardage.
Ronnie Estay 'placed' Archie down in the SEZ for a safety before halftime. Archie had a cast on his left arm.
On the last play of the game, Pat Lyons returned an OM INT down to the Ole Miss 5 yard line - where he was stopped from scoring by mob of LSU students on the field, or it would have ended 68-17.......

That was the team that lost Butch Duhe a few days before the season opened. We lost to Texas AM. on a "last play of the game Hail Mary" misjudged by freshman Paul Lyons. Paul , later went on to play quarterback and split time with Bert Jones. You could tell the team was down and flat before the game. Buddy went on to a great season. You are remembered by many.

He was good and I remember his play in the Orange Bowl. If he had not gotten injured in the 2nd half we would have probably won.

Buddy Lee and LSU had stood up to a great Nebraska team keeping Johnny Rodgers in check all night. Losing their starting running back Art Cantrelle and down 0-10, LSU came back to lead 12-10 on a Buddy Lee touchdown pass. On Nebraska’s final drive their running back clearly fumbled at midfield and LSU recovered. It would have ended the game, but an official came in and said the ball was down. After the game ended, Nebraska was crowned NC.

You really know you're old when you remember listening to J.C. Politz on the radio calling tiger games

He has the call on the Billy Cannon runback.

Best pass he ever threw might have been a lateral to Mike Hillman on first play of Auburn game... But look at the incredible passing percentage in 1970... Huge numbers for back then... Gigantic numbers for Mac coached team. Really sad to see him go. Listened to many a radio game with Ferguson calling the play by play and Buddy as QB.

The team all got a little trophy with the season record and a large screw attached to it.

My dad had it on his desk forever.

A classic. Our hate for Notre Dame begins with that trophy. Haha
