I'll admit I don't know of any salary limitations on UDFA. But, it would seem to me that several teams could end up in a bidding war for his talents that could close the money gap that this situation created. Would it be as much as going 1st round? No way. It could, however, get him significantly higher than typical UDFAs......

A commodity is a commodity.

ETA: I'll admit this thread was initiated without much knowledge of the UDFA detail, thus has mooted the point. That said, me not understanding this doesn't make me an idiot........it makes me someone who has devoted more energy to things above and beyond NFL draft rules.

Why are you starting a topic about something you know nothing about?

Maybe they can try to give him some incentives off the books, but...

Every undrafted rookie is locked into signing a three year contract. The three year contract will contain the minimum Paragraph 5 salary in each year, which will equal payouts of $435,000 in 2015, $525,000 in 2016, and $615,000 in 2017.

I thought there was a cap. Not sure how a bidding war works out with that.

No it can't. You really should have done some research before opening yourself up to this.

crazy situation, teams will be getting a top 15 pick for the bare minimum.

I don't get why a team didn't just spend a late 7th and tried to convince him to sign, reward outweighed the risk there. At the very least, you kept a competitor from getting a big discount on a premium player.

I will say this. I'd read where he may be able to pull off only a 2 year contract. If that's the case and he blows up in those 2 years, you bet your arse his next contract will be a huge guaranteed payday. On the flip side, it will have him preparing for life after football in the mean time as he gets the benefits of not being blinded by big early money.

the only real bidding is how much of a teams 80k udfa pool can be spent on la'el. Yeah so no bidding war at all actually.

I'll admit I don't know how professional sports works, but it would seem to me Collins can play center field for the Celtics until someone wants to pay him 1st rd NFL money.

Or just sue the State of Louisiana criminal system. Either way he should be rich by the fall equinox.

Apparently you have no clue what the hell you're talking about either.

There's a rookie pool based on picks.

He can get the league minimum and a max signing bonus of the udfa signing pool.

So he can get, at most, league minimum + ~85k

How would a team drafting him in the 7th round prevent someone from getting him at a large discount?
