In a recent thread, a lot of peeps on here said they were not the same fans that they were before LSU lost to Bama in the National Championship. I just don't see how that is possible.

I went through all the championships since 1990 and found all the "big time" coaches and programs that have lost big in a championship setting. I wonder if their fanbases are as negative and jaded as ours:

2012 - Notre Dame and Brian Kelly lost 42-14 against Bama. Point differential of 28

2011 - LSU and Les Miles lost 21-0 to Bama. Point differential of 21

2006 - Ohio St and Jim Tressel lost 41-14 to Florida. Point differential of 27

2004 - Oklahoma and Bob Stoops lost 55-19 to USC. Point differential of 36

1999 - Frank Beamer and Virginia Tech lost 46-29 to Florida St. Point differential of 17

1996 - Bobby Bowden and Florida St lost 52-20 to Florida. Point differential of 32

1995 - Steve Spurrier and Florida lost 62-24 to Nebraska. Point differential of 38

Did Miles have a poor gameplan and get blown out in the championship? Yes, but so has:
Brian Kelly (regarded as a top 5-10 cfb coach)
Jim Tressel (1 BCS Championship in 3 appearances)
Bob Stoops (1 BCS Championship in 4 appearances)
Frank Beamer (Highly regarded coach)
Bobby Bowden (2 National Championships, 16 top 10 finishes)
Steve Spurrier (1 National Championship, 6 SEC Championships)

nice post.

It was kind of crazy how many people in that thread said they were different fans after 21-0.

How does this fact have anything to do with other blow out championships?

For the most part, people just take football less serious. I'd say I am in that boat, though the difference isn't very significant I'd say I have changed my outlook on football after that game. It isn't necessarily bad.

Nothing to do with losing by 21. Everything to do with it being to our ex-coach who was becoming known as one of the greatest of all time in CFB. Same guys probably still cry about being dumped by their HS girlfriend.

so much truth, yet so little chance of being understood by those to whom it's directed

I really don't think that we had a terrible gameplan. We just thought that we would be able to get some kind of push up front.

It's not losing 21-0 in my opinion. It was how we lost. The same gameplan the whole game. What was ironic was Les pulled JL out of Alabama because he wasn't performing and put in JJ. Why didn't that happen in the NC game? Hell at half you make the switch and try to generate a spark.

I'm no less of a fan because of that. But that really left a sore spot to me. Time management issues don't bother me. Happens to all coaches. Like Saban. Ha. 57 yard field goal. Anyway it was just the terrible coaching in the game whereas in some of the other scenarios it was just outclassing. Les made no attempt to try and salvage that game. Just my opinion.

New coordinator. New players. New season.

I'm not really sure what more he could have done at that point with what he was working with.

the FACT is that every coach gets blown out sometimes, at any level and in every sport. some of LSU fans hold our football coach to an impossible standard. to be fair though it should be remembered that after our '07 NC our team did go downhill for awhile. our OL recruiting and turnover was atrocious and i'm surprised that the OL coach was not fired earlier. that and our QB troubles led to a couple of pretty bad offensive teams. it's amazing how many games we won on defense and special teams.

The reason ours is tough to deal with is cause of who it was to.

It was just that LSU lost, but how they lost. It was such a moral defeat to be bested by a team that you already beat that season, and to a former coach no less.

However, I think most people are upset over the way that game was played. When JJ got suspended, Lee saved that season by being a steady rock. Then when the offense needed a spark to get anything going in the NC game, Lee sat on the sideline.

That has to be what ultimately soured most people on that season.

I think what's most frustrating is the fact that the 2011 LSU team had one of the most dominating college football seasons in history and may have gone down as the top BCS team during this era. Hell even a competitive game would have been fine...but getting blown out like that was truly baffling considering how great LSU played during the regular season.
