Dumb. Just go 6 with two first round byes. #9-12 has no reason to be on the field with 1-4 in December. Clear separation by then

Terrible idea. Can anyone really argue that the best teams haven’t won since the 4 team playoff was put in place?

It’s so simple to keep the conferences relevant. Power 5 championship game is 10 teams plus 2 highest ranks outside power 5 (there is your 12 team playoff) play in for a 6 team playoff. Rank those 6 and you have your tournament.
It makes too much sense, so they will never do that.
Let the conferences themselves fight over how they choose the championship game. That gives the polls or “selection committee” only two spots to frick up (with teams that don’t have a fighting chance to win anyway).

Then at the very least the final four should be a lot more exciting than the current four-team playoff format, because the best four teams will be there, instead of the best three with one stinker who got in by default, because they were the conference champion with the perceived “better resume.”
