The optimist in me wants to believe this. The pessimist remembers last year. We'll see.

Then why leave Gilbert in so long with no other arms in the bullpen?

He's got it. He throws hard. He can get out of jams. He's got better off speed than stallings.

I just don't understand his bullpen logic at all. Hunter Newman does great, gets pulled after one inning. Then he lets a freshman Gilbert go 2+ innings with no one even in the bullpen in the 9th of a 1 run game?

How DARE you question Mainieri's coaching

Stalling is our closer. Gilbert will be the setup guy along with Newman.

This isn't the mlb. College teams often expect their closers to see more than 3 batters. Ever heard of extra innings? You couldn't just enjoy krob's first good game ever.. You had to go and jinx us. Seriously tho, PM is the woat at handling a bullpen

Are you positing that people don't question every single move he makes?

I'm not sure it was the plan for Lange to go 5, bbap. So why not let Newman close the gap if he's doing so well in a 1-run game?

man, you can second guess his pitching moves all you want. it's fair game after a loss. but to pretend that PM lost that game BECAUSE of his pitching moves is just wrong. on one hand you anoint this kid gilbert the closer in the seventh inning and then you bash PM for putting him in over newman.

we lost that game because we can't fricking hit. our clean up hitter pops up with a guy on 3rd and one out. we had NUMMEROUS chances to score WITHOUT EVEN GETTING A HIT and fricked up EVERY TIME. that is the story of the game, not PM and his moves.

the only move I would question is why he didn't pinch hit for Breaux in the 9th. the kid is not ready to start.

He put in Riley Smith over Newman. That was the mistake. He used Gilbert earlier than he had to because of that.

Also, PM's "matchups" worked great right?!?

The bullpen is going through tryouts right now. It's going to cost LSU a few close games early on but the position is deep by SEC and national standards.

1)Let's be honest Gilbert has been put in 2 back to back lose/lose situations just to see how he would react.

2)Mainieri hasn't used the same pen two times in a row with lead as he's obviously working people in different spots.

3)If the offense comes through once today, people would be praising Gilbert and hey LSU got an absolute steal from the state of AL, this squad reminds me so much of 2008 the more I look at it. (Not quite as top heavy in the lineup).

Or the defense. Deichmann and Freeman blew that last innings.

i'm gonna defend freeman. the ball took a bad hop and hit him in the nuts. bad break (those happen). but I agree with you previous posts about Smith after Newman and PM's "matchups". our lefty lineline failed pretty bad.

it's early. some of these guys are destined for pinch runner roles this year. as far as smith goes, he has really been regarded highly but his first two appearances didn't justify it.

If CPM didn't ruin his confidence today. I like the kid though.

There's two completely separate things going on here with this team.

1) They are young. They'll make mistakes. They just need time. And they'll get it. I have no problem with trying out new lineups. But at the same time, pigeon holing them into "matchups" defeats the fricking purpose of finding who can be your everyday gamers. Anyway, trying out new hitters and arms will result in losses. It happens.

2) PM still has trouble managing the bullpen. You think the plan was for Lange to go just 5? Newman was rolling so why not let him bridge the gap to the guys you had planned to get work after Lange? I mean, there was a plan I hope that didn't involve throwing Gilbert 3 innings... Right?

I like Gilbert but I felt the same about Stallings this time last year. Stallings with a dependable off-speed pitch can be deadly.

When he pulled Newman, I thought he was doing it to look at several guys, with an inning each if all went well. Then he leaves Gilbert in, so scrap my theory.

Each game, I try to figure out his reasoning when it comes to the pen, but it just seems like he has no real theory except to pull a reliever who is doing well and leaving in another who is struggling.

I know there has to be some experimenting right now with the pen, but he can accomplish that and still throw the more proven relievers when needed. I guess I'll never understand his logic.
