Texas A&M fans insist Chavis is the answer to their defensive deficiencies. They have all the necessary talent, but it was held back by coaching. I don't buy it. I saw too many occasions where A&M's defense was in perfect position to make plays, and their players simply got run over by more physical players on the opposing teams.

I think it will be more difficult for A&M to get better performance from all 11 players on defense than it will be for LSU to get improved play from 1 position on offense. LSU does not need to replace rushing yards on offense with passing yards to improve. All it needs is to complete a higher percentage of its passes, especially third down conversions, with the same type of rushing success as last year and LSU's offense will be fine.

Let me riddle this.

We won 8 games last year with this offense although younger and inexpierenced QBs. Even if they plateu, our defense will much much improved. We should/ could have won 10 games last year.

And i dont care about Aggies or their coaches.

The strength of the Aggie defense is the defensive line... which is de-emphasized in John Chavis's schemes.
The weakness of the LSU offense is the quarterback... which is the expertise of Cam Cameron.

I don't see where the debate lies...

For the record, I do think Chavis is capable of improving A&M's Defense. I just do not think the improvement will be evident this year.

Our Offense is going to be more balanced and efficient....

LSU's defense will be more improved than aTm's defense.

I think both will improve. face it, the chief is a damn good DC. just not good enough to hold leads at the end of games and that was because he was so predictable at that stage of the game. he also had gotten lazy recruiting LB's and Haley just didn't hack it recruiting DL.

imo, Chavis saw the writing on the wall and he'll be able to extend his career at a&m and they are paying premium for it.

this year, our offense will improve more than their D but I think Chavis will have a beneficial effect on their D for a few years (like he did ours). but a&m's competitors know chavis and his tendencies and he won't be the genius they think they got. let's just hope cam can call the plays to take advantage of chavis' weaknesses.

How can A&M defense get worse? That is why Chavis went there, to get credit for it.

This is exactly why Chavis left a good gig at LSU. After a disappointing season made three straight years of decline he was worried that, should LSU not perform in 2015, Miles could lose his job. He probably didn't think this was a likelihood, but still a significant possibility.

He asked LSU to give him a multi-year guaranteed contract, they wouldn't, and he found someone in Sumlin who would. He now has his last earning years guaranteed, and he can ride off into the sunset without depending upon the goodwill of any man. That's called "%uck you" money.

As an LSU fan I was a little disappointed, although Miles more than made up with it with two solid hires, but personally I'd have to congratulate Chavis for an excellent career move. Critics who don't understand that this is a business not a rah-rah thing, will disagree, but it WAS a great move by Chavis.

one thing you cannot discount is attitude.....the Aggie defense will play better, IF they think Chavis makes them better.

So he went to an A&M team on a 3-year decline o work for a coach whose seat is much hotter than Miles'?

LSU offense hands down. We have the athletes on offense to improve while TAMU doesn't have the athletes on defense.

Without trying to sound like a homer I think the defensive athletes at LSU helped Chavis more than Chavis helped the defense. He benefitted more from our defensive talent than he will at TAMU. In time they might get better but not this year.

Also, initially, I didn't believe the 3rd and Chavis stuff but have come to hate that aspect of his coaching.

While many of us hoped for a great season last year, the reality is that we were very, very young. Experience alone says our offense will improve. Also, there is the continuity of coordinators. Our offense isn't learning a new language from a different coordinator while TAMU is.

Just by watching our spring game it's our O. They haven't been recruiting well enough on D to be that much improved.

I do think their offense will be better, and that gives their D less snaps on the field. In that offense though...the D is on the field ALL THE TIME!!!

All coaches need players. All you need to know to show that Chavis had his own positive impact is that Mallory and Peveto couldn't do shite with essentially the same personnel. Those '08 and '09 defenses weren't all that talented. Lots of Danny McCray, lots of Rahim Alem. Teams attacked those guys. The '09 defense was much better.
