understand his family is in a dire financial situation, but with the resume our incoming Wichita assistant has with guards, you would think they'd manage for ONE more year. it probably cost him millions

So he has no one in his family that can make $1k in a month? You can make that at any hourly job.

Exactly how bad is his family's financial situation? I keep hearing this over and over that his family is poor. Is it that bad? Hell, I figure he was probably getting paid something by LSU.

He blew it. He should have came back and played a year under Wade.

There is zero guarantee that coming back to lsu is goung to result in getting him drafted.

Why would he need a guarantee?

If coming back gave him a legitimate chance of making a roster in the NBA it's a no brainer decision since he's likely to be living a lifestyle not too different than a scholarship athlete does at LSU.

It wasn't a strong financial decision. I understand that money isn't always the only reason to make these decisions. I just hope he knew what he was doing when he chose to hire an agent.

From a very far distance, it feels like someone was in his ear pushing him in this direction...and they pushed for him to sign with an agent so that there was no change of heart. What was the value in hiring an agent when he did vs. just a few weeks later when things are clearer?

I'm a huge Pelicans fan and scouting 2nd round /Undrafted Gems that can play with us.

To all LSU fans, can Blackney do well with a team like the Pelicans?

Meh. He's slightly undersized for an NBA two guard but also not a true ball handler. He has great athleticism but lacks effort on the defensive end and could only be described as a streaky scorer on offense. Lots of potential but he took a gamble by coming to an unproven basketball program and it backfired on him. He wasn't developed at all as a prospect and is still very raw.

I wish the best for him but he doesn't fit the Pelicans needs very well.

I think it's a pretty fair take. I will say that the lack of effort on defense and inconsistency on offense weren't just limited to him, but the LSU team as a whole under Johnny Jones. It just sucks we never got to see him with a good college coach. He has talent though, Alex Kennedy (i think) had some videos of him lighting it up at the combine on Twitter this week.

While not the same type of player, Tim Quarterman was a similar prospect in terms of inconsistencies and lack of effort, never really proving him self in college. He played very well in the summer league and earned a roster spot with the Blazers this year. I would imagine that it Blakeny makes a roster it will be the same way, unless he really blows scouts away leading up to the draft.

As far as whether or not he fits on the Pels, if he can shoot the 3 with consistency I wouldn't mind giving him a shot, but he still has a lot of development to go before he can be a real contributor at the next level.

Physically, Quarterman fits the NBA mold. His size/athleticism is NBA level. Blakeney is an undersized two guard. Those guys are a dime a dozen in the NBA unless they have incredible skills and/or ability to consistently knock down 3s.

Blakeney will likely make a roster. He has great athleticism and has a nice stroke. He could easily be an off the bench scorer and I'd imagine he's the kind of kid who can play defense if he's trying land a roster spot and a coach jumps his arse. He has already worked out for at least two NBA teams.

I hope he gets a spot somewhere.

His best attributes are his shooting and scoring, but he was very streaky at times last year. I feel like he got more consistent with his shot, he could do well as 3pt specialist. Not sure if worth the pick though.

Thing is, you are not going to find a second round pick typically without some major holes.

After dealing with the Johnny Jones garbage, I'm surprised he didn't leave sooner. I won't blame anyone for giving up on LSU basketball after watching the last two JJ coached years.
