He did not suck last year. Why dont people give credit for his record at usc and lsu as interim head coach.

What the hell? It was a stalemate in the fourth quarter. The defense played lights out and the offense attempted to be creative but the OL didn't feel like blocking that night. What were the critical coaching errors in that one?

I am defending Orgeron's tenure at Ole Miss but if you think for a minute that is a comparable position and that talent on those teams or staff were remotely what he has at LSU then you have blinders on.

This has become the default straw man argument. No one judges his Ole Miss tenure based on LSU expectations. He was a historic failure even by Ole Miss standards and expectations.

He will be succesfull at LSU.

He will definitely be more successful at LSU than he was at Ole Miss, it would take an entire series of Joe Alleva hires to sink this program to the level Orgeron took Ole Miss to. The questions are how successful will he be relative to LSU's expectations, and how successful will he be compared to other coaches on the market at the time he was hired?

He is at the right place at the right time.
Yes, it lined up perfectly for him. Due to an incompetent, lazy, emotional, athletic director, a gullible fan base, and an incredible PR campaign he managed to land a job he never would have been given consideration for otherwise.

examples of middling head coaches from struggling programs (Michigan State for example)
oh yeah. The year before Saban took his current head coaching gig he was head coach of the Dolphins

The year before Ed joined the Tigers he was unemployed.

Sabans mentor is the greatest professional coach to ever live, Eds goes by the name Joey Freshwater

Not so, if LSU loses 6 games this year or any year he would be gone and that is fact

You go on thinking that. I was slightly exaggerating, but I guarantee you he has an absolute free pass this year.

Agree but i guarantee you he wont need a free pass. Ed orgeron will be very successful at lsu. Most former tigers were thrilled with his hire. Players from the 70's and 80's were happy for him

Hopefully it's ok to hope you are right but not expect it. That's where I am.

If we get good qb play we will be fine. We have 2'youngsters coming in that will compete and learn and should be ready next year. We are building quality deph as well. Lets go tigers

Did we hire Johnny Jones to coach football?

I'm pretty excited about our future QB potential, but very concerned about their development. LSU and Bama don't typically develop top QBs for the NFL like FSU does. Bama depends on top OL talent. Until we start developing superstar QBs, that needs to be our focus too.

He's referring to the fact that former BB players highly supported and influenced the JJ hire. That didn't work, and he's saying that just because former players want a certain coach for the team doesn't mean that coach is the right choice.

Good lord man, the point was the old BASKETBALL players fought for Jones, with a lot of the same rationale as used by O backers. Also didn't the players want Mike Archer?

As for his "good" record as USC and LSU its fools gold, he beat the teams he should and was 1-4 vs quality teams

his history will stay with him until it is proven better...

one is only as good as their last performance.

let's see what this year brings ... a great year, much of the past will be forgotten.

I don't know about the USC games but are we really going to give Coach O shite for losing to Alabama last year? We weren't supposed to win that game and we were in it late. Florida game, fine, put that on O. But we beat the tar out of A&M, Arkansas, and Mizzou and the offense looked better than it had in a very long time with Miles. And let's also not forget the bowl win against Louisville. 29-3.

The book is out on O, but his record as interim coach is not fairly defined by his two losses, especially given one was a nail biter to a team we hadnt beaten in 5 previous tries and went to the national championship.

I don't think anyone here expects him to go 3-9, but you don't think it's overly optimistic to expect 10-2 or better knowing what we know now?

We has 6 1st downs and 125 yards and ran the same miles gameplan everyone knows won't work against bama. He ran LF right into the teeth of bama's front 7 and gave Guice 2 carries.

So you give him credit when we looked good against triple digit run defenses yet don't blame him when we don't execute ok offense?

Are you talking about the games were we rushed 418 yards and 390 yards?

quote:

It was a nail biter because of our defense. Every team bama played except Kent State had more yards, points, and 1st downs than lsu did.

If you don't blame O for that then that's fine but you can't give him credit for the good offensive outputs.

Also
Our 2016 offense during O's interim tenure was all of 30 yards better than our 2015 offense. The 2015 offense went up against significantly better run defenses at Arly and ole miss.

2015 arky was 11th in opponents rushing yards per game
2016 arky was 89th in opponents rushing yards per game

2015 ole miss was 21st in opponents rushing yards per game
2016 ole miss was 117th in opponents rushing yards per game

Add in 2016 missourri that was 118th in opponents rushing yards per game.
