There were times when the guys commentating the games would be frustrated by the play calling and the routes called for on the passing plays. The box was always stacked, yet the pass plays were for the most part, underneath routs. Every once in a blue moon, a long pass was called and never anything to the tight ends over the middle. The intermediate passes in the middle of the field was non existent. Defenses played the short out or look ins, and the run. The line couldn't protect because they were always outnumbered at the line. The middle of the field was a safe zone for the defense.

We've got to play the games to find out where things stand with Mett. Let's hope he projects better leadership in the huddle than he does doing sports interviews.

This is why I'm not worried about A&m in DV this year. They couldn't beat us with zero passing game and they lost all their best defenders( they haven't recruited well enough to just reload on defense).

Did you watch the bowl game? Offensive coaches call a play to get a first down, a play that catches Clemson with their pants down( A 3 yard out route that my son could throw) and Mett throws it into the dirt. While we had a lot of drops , Mett isn't really accurate. While a good bit of his passes should've been caught, his inaccuracy made the catches harder than they should've been.

When you have a qb struggling with accuracy and wr dropping the ball, the last thing you call is a play over the middle. It's the last kind of play you want.

If he can improve his deep throws then the offense will be very very dangerous

Mett hit 58%, had 12 TDs, 7 ints, a QB ranking nationally in the 70ies, we had a passing offense in the 90ies, and if you watched the Clemson game, he has to improve on more than just his deep throws.

He has talent, but he is inconsistent. In our last two games he hit 50% for 340 yards, had one TD and one int, and a QB rating of 120. Hardly anything to get worked up over as improving a ton.

It may not have been the best situation, but he did not look good in the Spring game. Numbers aside; he managed to look bad with a clear advantage over the 2nd teamers. In fact the true freshman running for his life looked better than Mett. I hope he improves, no one hopes he improves more than I do, but I didn't see it. That is why I went to the Spring game.

No one Nationally is sold on Mettenberger until he does it on the field. Also, I believe no one is sold on the offense until we see what Cameron is allowed to do. Les is still on the sidelines and until I see different, I believe Cam's role is a "help a good friend" deal more than a long term role. I may be wrong, but I need to see it first.

Also, our kicking game needs to improve alot as well. Without it, we lose one of Les' major crutches for the offense.

This.

People confuse FBS with NFL and X-Box.
The NFL has way more time to practice these routes, and there are real consequences from failed plays unlike mistakes on toys.

uhhh I wanted a good QB that could read a defense and hit wide arse open WRs at times, and somehow be a decent leader. We got none of that!! Spare me the pass protection and early season drops horse shite. Both of those issues improved throughout the season, unlike Mett's play. He's not garbage by any means, but he's not good either.

Apologies to the sunshine pumpers, but this guy is correct. Sure Mett showed flashes of brilliance, but he was consistently average last year. I've heard a lot of excuses for Mett, but the guy's just average. And he has NO LEADERSHIP skills, which is very important for a QB.

Look, we all hope that Cam makes a difference and the OL and receivers play better to help Mett out. But Mett simply didn't show the elite skills we were hoping for last year. This year could be different, but I'm not holding my breath. Usually guys that "have it" show it immediately. Last year Mett was a redshirt junior with two years in our system. We may see marginal improvement this year, but I think last year is a good indication of what Mett has.

Two reasons why Mett improves:

quote:

four veterans return across the offensive line

quote:

offensive coordinator Cam Cameron

Having a legit OC will do wonders for this kid and the Tiger offense on whole. Hopefully Les will let Cam put the athletes the Tigers have in position to be athletes and put the 70's cloud of dust and gimmicks offense in the rearview.

So far Mett has been very average. He doesn't seem to be a leader in the huddle. His deep passing is very poor but maybe this is his year. If not we will be in for a very long season!

He needs to be 10 percent better on his completion percentage and yards. In addition to this we needs to throw 25 tds and no more than 7 interceptions this season.

10 percent more yards would put him at 2,870 yards passing, 10 percent more passes completed would put him at 69 percent completed. I believe that the addition of Leslie and Dural will help with the TD number, and we are also returning 2 guys that would be un-real slot players on any other team, and they will actually get to play the slot this year. This in addition to the utilization of the tight end and backs in our passing game will create all kinds of issues for opposing teams. This is the major difference that Cameron will make. Exploiting matchups.

If Mett is 10 percent better than he was last year, and throws more touchdowns, the offense will be explosive. 2,870 yards, 69 percent, 25/7.
That is what he is capable of.

Finally someone post some realistic expectations for improvement and doesn't just come here to take a dump on the guy who was trying his best. Mett definitely has athletic limitations, but he's got a big time arm. The improved receiver play this year will show right from the get go in the new passing game.

Another positive thing about Zach that no one has mentioned is how tough he is. He'll stand in there until the last second to make sure his guy gets open and take some brutal hits and he just gets back up and does it again. The guy has more leadership then he is given credit for, not everyone is the rah-rah pump your chest type of leader.

If we would run some play action it would do wonders for Mett's passing and our offense.
