Good article. The bottom line...it's all about the money.
Hopefully after this season is over and with the new conference re-alignment, new negotiations will be held for television contracts. Maybe, just maybe the SEC can have a stipulation about night games in the contract.
A man can dream!

LSU wants night games so we all have to take less money.

Joe (or whomever is screening these for him),
90% of the true fans already know the reason as to why we did not have any night games this season. The problem we have is more along the lines of us wanting to hear something from you besides excuses. Perhaps a plan to attempt to insert an exemption in the next tv contract negotiation? And I’m fairly sure the current CBS contract expires 1-3 years from now. Do I honestly believe that the network would have a major problem if one of the major schools (reasons they are signing said deal) asks for a 1 night game per year at the lease clause in the deal? No, I don’t, and I’d expect you as our athletic director to at the very least ask for it and make an attempt, if for no other reason than to placate the fans whom you make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to please.
thanks for (hopefully) reading this,

No, they don't. Only a majority (or whatever number the conference by-laws provide) must agree.

Lobbying for a clause to allow you to insure one night SEC home game per season is not an unreasonable request in such negotiations.
No, it's not an unreasonable request. It's a request LSU has made many times during negotiation of SEC TV contracts. In Joe Dean's words, "we get outvoted 11-1 every time".

do you have a link to us having to accept less money? Considering there is usually a bidding war between networks for the right to cover...do you have anything but your own idiotic opinion?

Yes, yes you do.

I get the reasons. I just hope CBS can balance things like "night games in Tiger Stadium" and the best matchup they can broadcast.
Bama-UT could have easily been picked up and no one would bat an eye.
I suppose in hindsight, the UK could have been a night game on ESPN. Oh well.
ETA: Was looking at the games a couple of Saturdays ago, and there was really nothing else they could have broadcasted besides LSU-UF. Maybe AU-Arky.

Thank you for your email. I am sorry that you saw this letter as providing excuses because it was meant to provide an explanation. While we would like to insert exemptions into the TV contracts, which expire in 13 years, there are other schools that would want to do the same. There are some schools in the SEC that would prefer to play their games in the afternoon, but because CBS may not pick them up, they are forced to play on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU at night time. Please be assured we strongly express our feelings to the SEC and they are very aware of our desire to play at night. It is one of the reasons there is a stipulation that not more than one game can be moved to the morning (11:20 a.m. slot) from night, because of our continued insistence to not inconvenience the fans who are used to night games. This is the first time in 76 years we have not played a night SEC game, so it is a bit of an oddity. We will continue to make every effort to play games at night.

Its all BS. If this was Alabama's tradition CBS was screwing with, CBS and the SEC would back off. Where are our attorney's & negotiators?
I dont know if thats true or not. What I do know is that College is suppose to be about amateur sports and Pro sports about money. That is and recently has not been the case.
College is now the minors for the pros and all about the Money.
Its a real shame.

quote:How exactly is that sad? Unless the letters are really stupid, insulting and baseless they would only serve to illustrate that our fan base is connected, passionate and enthusiastic about our proud football heritage. I totally understand that we've gotta do what we've gotta do, but for right now it's good that he's addressing the fans and its good that our fans care.
Sad that he has to post a letter explaining what most should understand already. I can only imagine the number of emails he has been getting from "fans" complaining about the daytime kickoffs.
Now when it comes to the CBS contract we need to do a better job of negotiating that when it comes around again so we aren't held hostage. Since we are the most successfull and presitgious Conference and everybody wants us why can't LSU as one of the leaders in that conference weild more influence so that our best interests are served?

Actually, there's quite a few Bama fans upset that LSU keeps getting on CBS, and they keep getting night games. To them, day games are the tradition and 6pm ESPN2 kickoffs suck.

Negotiation is all about positioning...
When the time comes.... If LSU football is drawing good viewing ratings and such, then we will be in a much better position to negotiate...
As a whole I think the SEC is in a much better position to approach CBS and basically say... We have the most passionate fan base, the most competitive conference and the most BCS champions in the last decade... If you don't want to broadcast a saturday night game of one of our SEC brethren, fine. We will talk to someone who will....
That is negotiating...

I'd like us to be guaranteed one SEC night game a year. doesn't seem to be that big of a request.

We could move to the Big East or the Sun Belt, then we would probably have all night games.
