Yall really believe that don't you? Don't you think there would have been lawsuits, etc. had nothing had truly happened? What about the two boosters who were permanently barred from the program?

Zero legitimacy? Then the NCAA just handed down these horrendous sanctions just because?

Do you seriously not know wtf you are talking about?? Lester Earl lied to the NCAA. He admitted it. Case closed. Throwing that shite at Johnny Jones is complete BS at this point and makes you look ignorant for doing so.

Why didn't LSU/Dale Brown/Johnny Jones sue Lester Earl/NCAA for slander?

Oh I believe we paid him and probably numerous other guys but the only reason the NCAA came sniffing around and handed down that much was to make an example of Dale due to his outspokenness against them.

Is there a credible link to Jones involvement with Earl? I'm ready to give him a chance, but want to read up on what he did or didn't do.

Lester Earl apologizes, Brown/Jones cleared

quote:

Brown and Jones, who was initially alleged to have given Earl $6,600, were cleared of all violations. Still, Earl in his letter felt they both deserved an apology. "I feel sorriest for hurting coach Dale Brown," Earl wrote. "Coach Brown, I apologize to you for tarnishing your magnificent career at LSU. The second apology I owe most is to coach Johnny Jones. Coach Jones, I never imagined you would have suffered so much because of the few supposed 'little things' I told the NCAA that you did."

ETA: Btw people, I found that article in about 5 seconds. Come on now!

I will support him if he's the guy.

I just don't like Temple (cringe) and so much of the old guard coming out for this guy (and what seems to be) pressuring Alleva publicly...a guy whose resume isn't all that spectacular. Reminds me of a darker time surrounding LSU football.

I agree with this. This hire is mired in LSU politics. Can't Alleva just do his job?

If we can't get anyone but Johnny Jones, that's fine. Hire him. I'll be his biggest fan. But Johnny has coached at North Texas for 11 yrs. There is a reason he hasn't been offered a job at a major school. People don't think he can get it done at a high level.

Personally, I want someone who can recruit nationally. I find it hard to believe that Johnny can do that. We need someone that can bring the talent to Louisiana. Louisiana recruits will follow.

Why was there never a lawsuit? It seems like LSU would have sued if the guy was telling all these lies at the time, rather than accept the harsh NCAA punishments.

Bull shite and you know it.He admitted he lied but also said Jones made 4 payments for his truck and a few "small gifts of $250". After he said he lied about the big payment. Jones NEVER challenged either claim.

The only reason he wrote that piece I'm sure is so people would stop hating his guts in Baton Rouge.

You guys are gonna believe what you want. It's pretty obvious you aren't gonna change your minds regardless of how much information to the contrary is thrown directly in your face.

If that link isn't enough for you then that's your problem.

In sum: Johnny Jones' name has been cleared of any wrong doing while at LSU. He is a risk hire, but so was Billy Donovan. There's nothing that proves right now that he is not at least a good candidate for the job.

I think the bashing of Johnny should stop. I am not advocating for or against him

not bashing here, it's rediculous how the tail always tries to wag the dog and personal agendas and politics muddy the waters when we just need someone who wants to be here and is qualified.....minus the extra baggage sure would be nice too....I know, in a perfect world.

I absolutely agree it's about recruiting, but if that's our approach would Butch Pierre actually recruit the state of LA better? Plus, bring a greater sense of youth?

The sense of youth part is hard to defend...........Jones and Pierre entered college in the same year, 1980.

I don't have a problem with him personally, I just want a proven winner. I don't think he is that proven winner and I don't think he is going to put butts in the seats.

I agree. I will support him just as I supported TJ. I don't look to have my opinion validated by LSU failing. But I don't think this is a good hire if this happens and there are better candidates for the job.

LINK

It didn't end well at LSU for Jones, who first came to Baton Rouge as a jet-quick point guard from DeRidder High in the 1970s. Brown retired in 1997 under an NCAA investigation of, among other things, LSU's recruitment of Lester Earl. Jones was later cleared of any wrongdoing in the case.

That's just another source (ESPN) stating Jones was cleared. Dude EVERYONE knows he was cleared. MOVE ON!

You think the NCAA is just gonna issue a declaratory statement saying "Sorry for the frick up 15 years ago"?

Ok.......still the guy was at North Texas for 11 years and didn't garner as much as an interview from anyone else.

Calipari is a "risky hire", but he has an enormous, estalished upside.
Jones is also a risky hire....for lots of reasons.
Don't see a lot of upside.
