He would have to be so good that the economic value of wins contributed by that player (in one our least profitable sports) would outweigh the economic value of one football game.
I'm a trillion percent positive that the amount of money one LSU home game brings to the Athletic Department, University, and Baton Rouge economy >>>>>>>>>>>>> The amount of money from incremental wins due to one player in a lesser sport.

No one is insinuating that we would give them a home football game. That is crazy talk. Inviting them back for another big payday for playing at Tiger Stadium is not, however. There is a good chance we would do that anyway, if they were not being dicks.
It would actually not be "giving them a game" it would be "continuing a good relationship" which would result in a game, or even multiple games, basketball home-and-homes, and other considerations. (baseball games, softball games, etc.)
This would not be for Odoh. It would basically be, if you shite on us, be prepared to never play us in another sport. However, if you release Odoh, we will continue our good relationship, and perhaps even grow it.

Well put.
I'd have to assume that (1) we want Odoh and (2) he doesn't have grade problems, otherwise I can't understand the reason for the restriction (unless tampering was involved).

My misunderstanding.
I do agree with the idea that, if this continues, UNT should go frick themselves, indefinitely.

What I don't get about this is...Why the restriction if we don't want him? There's no point in that. To me it seems obvious that we want him because of the restriction and they just don't want to let us have him.

Ponamsky talking about it now

Threaten to never schedule UNT ever again in football.
Huge loss in pay for them.

That's what I meant. Since there is a restriction, we must want him and he must have the grades.

The academic part sounds like a bullshite cover. Johnny Jones wasn't recruiting any centers for UNT to replace Odoh, so I'm not sure how much has changed in his academic situation in the past two weeks.
Finals are this week...
As far as this being a dick move, probably. But I would be careful about making to much of a stir on this because UNT probably has a some sort of a case of tampering either by Jones or Forrest..
This might just be something to let go from all sides unless UNT and LSU come to some form of agreement. Teh tampering allegation would be WAY more hurtful for LSU then any possible negative press UNT would get.

This isn't the NFL. Tampering allegations are bullshite. Nothing happens -- ever.

13.1.1.3 Four-Year College Prospective Student-Athletes. "An athletics staff member or other representative of the institution’s athletics interests shall not make contact with the student-athlete of another NCAA or NAIA four-year collegiate institution, directly or indirectly, without first obtaining the written permission of the first institution’s athletics director (or an athletics administrator designated by the athletics director) to do so, regardless of who makes the initial contact. If permission is not granted, the second institution shall not encourage the transfer and the institution shall not provide athletically related financial assistance to the student-athlete until the student-athlete has attended the second institution for one academic year. If permission is granted to contact the student-athlete, all applicable NCAA recruiting rules apply. If an institution receives a written request from a student-athlete to permit another institution to contact the student-athlete about transferring, the institution shall grant or deny the request within seven business days (see Bylaw 13.02.1) of receipt of the request. If the institution fails to respond to the student-athlete’s written request within seven business days, permission shall be granted by default and the institution shall provide written permission to the student-athlete."
The problem is that with the new hardon the NCAA has over stuff these days, there is no telling how they will react. Look how badly they hammered GT over what most people thought were minor allegations. Combine that with how poorly the bylaw is written and if the NCAA wanted to they could find a violation.
I am not advocating UNT to file a tampering charge with the NCAA, not the SEC or to even file at all, but if LSU drags UNT over the coals over this that is the only potential recourse the school has to defend itself. Most complaints go to the conference because neither side wants to push the issue. If LSU makes this an issue, UNT can easily fire back by not only complaint to their Conference and the SEC but also make a formal complaint to the NCAA.
Not sure anyone wants to go down this rabbit hole. I would stay away from the idea of trying to threaten or refuse to play UNT over this because then they essentially have nothing to lose.Nobody wants the NCAA on campus digging through the MBB program. Nothing good ever comes from stuff like this.
Posted on 5/9/12 at 12:47 pm to laxtonto
The coaches have an unwritten code on this issue to never rat on each other. I never said there wasn't a rule, just that nothing will happen. It won't.

Bubba, do we know for sure that there is interest from LSU and Odoh? How can we find out?
Posted on 5/9/12 at 1:41 pm to Geaux_Time
There is. Johnny has told several people he wants Odoh.
This is going to be worked out. I can't imagine UNT would continue this position.

Hannagrif on the radio saying he wants Mettenberger to go 'Rohan Davey' on UNT this fall.
