The big difference here is that Tyrann earned his offers on the camp circuit, which is a pretty regular course for how guys who are "off the radar" in their rising-senior summer blow up. There was anticipation and excitement about his recruitment and commitment even though it came over the summer.
Claiborne on the other hand was a pretty damn a-typical recruit from the the timing of his offer, the school he was a product of, and the fact that there wasn't even a picture/evaluation on any of the sites from a combine or a camp.
Claiborne is the very definition of a coaching staff doing their due-dilligance and not leaving any stone unturned.

Rivals ranked Mo Claiborne the 58th best Athlete and 21st in Louisiana. He had offers from Texas A&M, Nebraska, Arkansas State, La Tech and LSU. So not EVERYBODY thought he was a steal.
To come from that position to the winner of the Thorpe Award and be the 6th player picked in the NFL draft is amazing and is an indication that the LSU staff saw something a LOT of other people missed. That is the point.

They don't stop updating their ranking -- they stop updating the offer list section (or do it very infrequently/rarely).

Mo was a hidden gem!How many of you recruiting geeks ever play football? Recruiters look at more than Rivals,Scout etc.When Mo commited,you geeks went crazy because of his lack of stars.
How many of you "experts" have ever spotted a big time prospect before reading about him on a pay site?
Subcribing to pay sites and posting non stop on this recruiting board does not make any of you "experts" so stop arguing over who knows more about recruits.

Neither lynx nor just about anyone who follows recruiting closely went crazy when Claiborne committed. A lot of posters did but not a lot of recruitniks.

At the time LSU got the commitment from Mathieu he sure was a "diamond in the rough." He got his hype from the Tennesse Camp which was more than a month prior to LSU offering/his commitment. If he was so highly sought after then he would have gotten many more offers during that period. LSU saw the "diamond in the rough" early and capitalized on getting him to commit before other teams figured it out.

You can live in that false reality if you want. Mathieu was one of the hottest names in the recruiting circuit by the time he committed to LSU.
I see two components for someone to truly be a diamond in the rough...first, you find someone no one knows about and second, you see potential in that player that no one else does. If both exist, then you have a diamond in the rough.
If Dexter Blackmon had come to LSU and become a first round talent, then he would have fit this description

Did anyone figure out what happened to the kid? He just disappeared into thin air....one of the oddest recruits we have ever gone after.
Selma actually doesn't have cell phones either, since they would allow for videoing.

He spent two years at JUCO in Kansas then went to Arkansas State. Last year he played in 8 games and had 17 tackles as a backup.

I can't think of a situation when the second part of that "equation" would ever come about though? At least not in the context of everyone having a camera and access to the internet. Once a major college program finds someone that no-one knows about, film is going to surface and it'll show something that explains why the school went after this unknown kid.
Tyrus Thomas was a "diamond in the rough" under your definition I guess, but you can't really give the coaches a lot of credit for knowing he'd grow half a foot during his RS year.
I guess I'm just saying the evaluation and finding the guy no-one is aware of is the more impressive and important aspect for a coaching staff.

Well...these are certainly examples of the coaching staff having their eyes on things, knowing their state, and offering good athletes before they get on the radar and become harder to get.
There is something to be said for that.
