re: Newsflash: Claiborne and Tyrann were not diamonds in the rough

Mo was a three star. What else is there to say? I agree he should have been rated higher, but he wasn't.

Kevin Spears is a three star on one service and is unrated on two others. After watching his video, I'm positive this guy is a major college prospect.

How is this different than what happened with Spears?

By all accounts, this kids video is great against good competition.

I agree with your original assesment on those two players. But you are using the skills of an evaluator rather than the hype of a star-gazer. They were hidden gems from a star-gazer perspective. Who will ever forget the threads for those two back in the day. I think the name Ratphuk Hobley was prominent in both.

if Ratphuk Hobley wants in, we'll make space.

And if you don't see this exact scenario with Spears, you sir are the fool. Some highlights are flashy and some are just pure talent. The comparison to Mo is due to the Tech offer, much like Spears. It's an accurate comparison when defining a diamond in the rough..deal with it.

Come on. Mathieu's best offer outside of LSU was Southern Miss. You can not convince me that he wasn't a "diamond in the rough." At least Claiborne had some other decent offers from A&M and Nebraska. Other schools had plenty of time to jump on Mathieu because he committed to LSU in July.

More like a month later, and I know you remember all the crying and gnashing of teeth when we picked him up it was bad.

You sir are an idiot. Claiborne turned out to be a great receiver. TM7 was a piss ant quick dude with a huge ego. Yeah Chavis and Ron Cooper made them what they are.

Claiborne was a three star. One of the top 750 prospects. Not exactly predictive of a first round pick. Or a Heisman nomination either for that matter or defensive player of the year awards when also including Mathieu and his accomplishments

I know you meant cornerback, but I think that Mo was actually a better WR than a lot of the guys he covered in college. He made a few INTs that looked like he was the guy running the route and caught the ball like a WR.

The problem people had with Claiborne was getting a relative unknown when we were down to so few slots remaining. People thought it meant worse things, like the big fish on the board weren't coming.

Hence, Spears

I'm not going to say they made TM7. Tyrann was a park ball legend and was the best high school player in New Orleans for a few years. Lock down corners don't get much attention on average/bad teams unless they go to camp. New Orleans people knew about him though.

Probably some similarity, with so few slots left.

I think this thread goes to show the exact kind of nonsense I was trying to explain in the first place

Also consistent is the people who have been active on the RB for years can recount what I am describing...oh what a coincidence.

re: Newsflash: Claiborne and Tyrann were not diamonds in the rough
TM7 was pretty well received around here when we offered and he committed. His legend had grown by that time because of the Tennessee camp and the word of our insiders.

Claiborne was known about by very few and that's why the uproar when he committed. His film was great but he would/should still be considered a diamond in the rough because of the obscurity he had during his recruitment.

Pretty much most of these recruits are diamonds in the rough if you really think about it. Very few of them are fully ready to play well at the college level right away. They all need to be coached up and smoothed out. It's why we hire coaches and why there are so many top ranked recruits that don't pan out. They're all projections and that always comes with some rawness and rough edges.

Funny how recruiting has changed over the years. These recruiting services have really created a bunch of star gazers out there. I had a friend get a football scholarship to LSU back in the early 80's and no one outside of the local area had ever heard of him but he was a local legend.

Worst post ever! Who cares.. They played here. They were awesome. I don't give a frick if they were DFR or known talent... They wore purple and gold and rocked out with their cocks out!

re: Newsflash: Claiborne and Tyrann were not diamonds in the rough
Tyrann, you have a point. Claiborne was a 2-3 star ATHLETE who was primarily a QB in HS, and didn't have a good offer list.

How was Claiborne not a diamond in the rough? Smooth athlete or not, that wasn't enough for services to vault him quickly to the top of their lists or for other big schools to fight for his signature.
