Is there a worse recruiter in major college basketball than Trent Johnson?

Seriously.

It's three weeks from the start of the fall signing period, he has five scholarships to give in a class pretty much everybody would agree is make-or-break for him (assuming he doesn't lose another 20 games this year) and all he's got is one commitment?

Who else is he getting? The Qualls kid from Shreveport just committed to Arkansas. Felix from St. Aug is going to Texas. Maybe he turns Gathers, but outside of a few rumors I haven't seen anything that would make me believe he's not going to St. John's. And if there's a kid outside Louisiana who's even seriously interested in LSU I don't know who he is.

It's not like we're Auburn or something. LSU has perfectly good facilities, a huge fan following, it's a great school in a fun city to go to college, there is some high-profile basketball tradition here even though it's a lot more uneven than we'd like and when things are going well this program has been known to be rocking. And yet we can't even sign enough people to fill 13 scholarships.

It looks like goldbricking to me. It looks like he's not even serious about doing his job. Is he going to plan on raiding Miles' roster for talent every December like he's doing with Ronald Martin this year?

Well damn, Bubba, you're the one maintaining the hoop recruiting thread - you tell me. Who's he going to sign?

Is there one Top 50 recruit even remotely possible for LSU to sign this year? Generally speaking you've got to sign at least one Top 50 player per year if you expect to have any chance at being a Top 25 type team. Unless he turns Gathers I don't think he can get one.

Other than Morgan, is there one Top 100 recruit he has a real chance to sign? I don't see one of those, either.

In fact, I have yet to even hear of a recruit of note making an official visit to LSU this fall. Maybe I missed it.

So who's he recruiting? At this rate, Miles might have a good bit more basketball talent on the football team than Trent will.

Yeah, this is definitely not the feather in Alleva's cap. This hire could not have been worse.

Below is a quote from one of my posts in the recruiting thread. It is still currently my opinion. I am disappointed that LSU did not offer, or even actively recruit, Michael Qualls. LSU has also not recruited Josh Gray, either before he committed to Mississippi State, or after he decommitted. He is setting up visits now with no word from LSU.

I also have no knowledge of any official visits this year, either in the past or future, except Morgan.

I am beginning to be of the opinion that Trent Johnson is getting some flack on the recruiting trail based on his job security and lack of success. I predict he will wait until the spring to sign anyone besides Morgan. By that time, LSU will have had a good season and his future will be secure. He can then pick up some good spring signees, which there are always some good ones. Or he will have had a bad season and be fired.

Either way, the future of Trent Johnson will be decided by spring (actually, probably February as we will know how the season is going by that time).

His third option would be to sign some players early that are below the quality level that he needs.

I don't think he is even close to being the worst recruiter, BTW.

What if we close with Sanchez, flip Gathers and land a SF type player. What would people think of those three with Morgan for this season?

They would be delighted but right now it looks bleak.

That would be great. I don't really hold out any hope for Gathers. I think Sanchez is probably just as good in the short term, as a junior college player with international experience. He would probably have a more immediate impact, but would not be the PR hit that Gathers would be.

There are still quite a few talented players on our board and I don't have a problem with the names that are left. A very good class could be crafted out of that group. It's the lack of info and news that is disturbing, and also lack of apparent interest in some Louisiana players (Qualls and Gray).

Do you see the situation at St. John's causing Gathers to rethink signing with them or at least signing early. Coach's time at school now up in the air, and only 8 scholarship players as of right now. Would have to think he is at least looking at another option just in case.

Considering the lack of talent over the last couple of years. It looks like this year has been a little above average as far as quality of recruits.

We got JOB last year who was a top 50 recruit.

Malik Morgan, Matt Derenbecker & Aaron Dotson are top 100.

And it's not as though we've had a lot of talent to pick and choose from the past few years. Although I understand us getting Hickey means we don't "need" Felix, but I said from the get go that Gathers (or a more highly regarded player) was pretty much a make or break prospect this year.

I've said all along though that TJ needs to get a top notch recruiter on staff.

I really think this years team will be better with JOB and Hamilton down low. If Turner can play the 3 and Hicky can play consistently at the point, we could actually have a pretty decent team.

I thought he did a pretty good job with the last class. How many McDonald's All-Americans do you expect to go to a program that is where this one is right now? Quite a few schools went after O'Bryant and Hamilton. This isn't Kentucky

After the last two years, LSU is not an attractive target for top players. However, this season will show that LSU is back. Wait until the results show this and you will see a whole different recruiting picture.

Also, La has been a hotbed of great BB talent in previous years. With a few exceptions, that has not been the case recently. Bad timing for Trent.

The fact of the matter is I don't want what Kentucky has. 5 star players are just biding their time before the NBA. The are "one and done". What we need are players who want a degree, are underrated (like Turner last year) and want to play as a team and build up the program. They may be hard to find, but this year we will see what Trent has accomplished.

I for one expect LSU to make the NCAA field, win 75% or more of their games, and be in the top three or four teams in the SEC. As the season progresses, the fans will be back.

Fans hated Miles for a few years, gave Saban credit for LSU's 2007 BCS NC, and showed Miles no respect! Look at him now!! Aren't we glad we didn't run him out of town like you are trying to do with Trent.

I agree with a lot of this post, but it's honestly laughable to say that you don't want 5-star type players. Everyone wants them, and most of them do not go pro. Those that want to be one-and-dones will go to a 'sexy' school like Kentucky, Kansas, etc, so we'd never have had a chance with them. And really, I don't think we've ever been an "attractive" school for top players - we had a few great years from the lat 90's to 2006 when Louisiana produced some excellent national prospects, and we managed to keep them. We are not a basketball school. We will rarely attract top 25 players who do not have a Louisiana connection or are from one of our nearby states without a legitimate basketball program (I'm looking at you, Mississippi). Unfortunately, that's just the way it is.

Realistically, if you're a top player, and you haven't been raised a huge fan of hometown U, would you even look twice at a place like LSU?

This is kind of my point. TJ thinks he will have a good year and have a chance at bigger recruits in the spring.
