Dandy Don says he's potentially a preferred walk-on at QB. What is a "preferred walk-on" and how does or does not that impact scholarship limits, if any?

if he's the same 6-5 U High QB i saw on TV i was very impressed.

He's got a cannon. could easily play on scholly for ULL, MSU, Tulane, etc.

Sweet, Im glad you answered the first guy's question...

Barrett is not that great of a QB. Ive seen him play every year and he doesnt exactly light the scoreboard up.

I think they invite you to join the team (not having to try out) as a walk on and it doesn't effect the scholarship numbers.

Preferred walk-ons are not on football scholarship. Basically the coaches are saying pay your own way but you have a spot on the team.

But in fairness, if a walk-on is recruited by other schools and offered athletic scholarships, isn't he considered a scholarship eligible recruit at other schools? Doesn't this somewhat circumvent the intent of the rules?

If your being recruited by other teams why would you walk on somewhere? That's makes no sense.

it doesnt matter who offered you. if you want to be a walk on somewhere you can be. it wont affect that school's scholarships at all.

You love a certain team.

I agree though. I would never walk on at LSU if I was offered full rides to other major conference schools.

Still... nobody here has defined what Dandy Don describes as a "preferred" walk-on. What is the difference between this and simply a walk-on?

Also, wouldn't he be likely, if he proves himself, to receive a scholarship at some point through attrition?

a preferred walkon is guaranteed a spot on the team. they report with the rest of the team when fall camp opens.

a walk on has to tryout for a spot on the team. they cant do this until school starts.

Okay... missed that previously. So, on the team, I understand that walk-ons have to pay extra to receive the upgraded athletic meals. s there anything else different that a walk-on doesn't receive that a scholarship athlete would get?

they dont get anything. no fees, no tuition(unless through tops), no housing, no books, no meal plan. they are regular students that happen to be on the football team.

Some people come from very wealthy families also. Used to getting what they want.

So passing up a school that really wants you, to go to a school that didn't offer you. So that means your last on the depth chart while there still recruiting these big time recruits then your last again. It shouldn't be about the money, it needs to be about talent and trying to grow his own talent.

Maybe they think they can work their way on the team. Its happened before. If you really love a school then i guess you take a chance.

Bingo, preferred walk-ons are usually scholarship eligible students who qualify for academic or other scholarships. This is a method of circumventing the athletic scholarship process. They usually qualify for a scholarship, or a series of scholarships.
