Also there was never a board dedicated to discussing Facebook issues, that's not the case for religious threads which had a home on the Poliboard (the caption of which specifically mentioned religious topics).

Facebook issues have a home on the OT, much like religious threads had a home on Political Talk. I wouldn't say Political Talk was a dedicated board to discuss religion, but it was certainly a home. In fact, prior to the recent flurry of policy changes, religious threads were permitted to be posted on either Political Talk or the OT.

I certainly don't think health/fitness topics deserve a dedicated board, nor a board solely for science. I do believe a technology board would be more than warranted.

And it's not that I'm completely antagonized to a religion board. But you have to stop and think - why is this discussion taking place now? Religion threads had thrived for years on Political Talk. The operators of the site decided on a policy change, which ultimately proved to be a bad move. Then, they made another one. And now, because of those changes, instead of reverting back to what was working for years, the answer suddenly seems to be the installation of another board.

It simply seems like a capricious, irrational solution to a manufactured problem.

Can't argue with someone who uses the word "capricious".

Believe me, I was happy with religious threads being on the Poliboard. But if the options are a dedicated board or no religious discussion at all, then I'll go with a dedicated board.

But if there isn't a threat, they don't have to establish any defense. I think posters like TulaneLSU, catholictigerfan, and others genuinely enjoy discussing the workings of the church, various biblical passages, and so forth...as evidenced by the Daily Bible threads.

the problem is that many see any questionings of their belief as a direct attack, which simply isn't the case. They can either respond to said attack or ignore it. I wouldn't include TulaneLSU on that list either, since he openly flames his religion on other boards

Quite honestly, though, we shouldn't even be having this conversation. Religion threads were posted on PT, and did fine. All of this conversation is erupting from a series of changes that shouldn't have occurred in the first place.

i agree, although i would greatly enjoy a Worldviews board. It would give this website the best chance for more growth too IMO

Tigerdroppings would reach a whole new audience IMO. The religious zealots and the atheists of the Internet

Sorry. I disagree. I believe the theists try to stifle any discussion where they have to defend their beliefs.

Or just R/A to have the post deleted

eta: though there are the times a topic is posted for discussion, then gets axed before a discussion can begin. But that's what happens around those with thin skin

Well, I should have said "many" theists instead of just theists. CTF and a few others seem to actually be willing to stay in debate with us.

I will never get why it bothers folk.

And again, why are prayer threads ok? In other words, we don't mind religious conversation just so long as your belief is the same as ours.

I thought that was funny

Especially since a prayer thread consists of "prayers sent" about 58 times.

Prayers threads have to be one of the most attention whoring threads on TD

I actually enjoyed reading the thread about the guy's daughter that was born with the medical issue and the updates about the procedures that were going on. The pictures were heartwarming even for someone who doesn't have a soul, like myself.

However, I think the stupid "Does Jesus exist" threads have no place on TD. It only promotes trolling on both sides.

Also if there is a religion board before a workout/fitness or tech board, I'd be rather disappointed.

There's no debate, one side isn't going to convince the other.

Discussion? Would be like a peace discussion in the middle east.

There'd be better discussion in a church or in a bar for those in the middle.

Well that didn't make for a prohibition on JJ vs JL threads on the rant.

I am fine with exploring a Religion & Philosophy Board

Wowzer!

I have long talked about my desire for a Religion/Philosophy/Science/Technology Board.

As for the guidelines, I think you can let pretty much anything go for the philosophy & science parts, but you have to draw some dividing lines for the religion & technology parts, because you definitely don't want all religious-themed or technology-themed subjects on this potential new board.

For example, prayer requests and anecdotal stories of the day would not belong on this board. Thoughts on the history of religion or on current ecumenical developments would belong.

Also, technology topics regarding particle colliders or Hubble telescopes or brain-computer interface devices might belong on this board. Talk about what you can do with your new iPhone or TiVo device would not belong on this board.

I'll probably have more thoughts on this later when I've had a chance to read this whole thread, but I gotta go for now...

I think its important to keep civil discussions on the religion board if we are going to have one. If threads turn into mud this board won't last.
