I lift 3 times a wk right now using the Texas method program (Squat, DL, bench and military press). I've been lifting on and off for maybe 3 yrs now, using 5/3/1 for a long time and then a much more aggressive program earlier this yr after a long pause in lifting (duck season). I pretty much just have a squat rack at the house and a few small dumbbells (I like it bc it doesn't cost me anything and I can squeeze a workout in a lot more easily than going to a gym). I also do a pretty large number of body weight exercises each wk. My main intent with lifting is functional strength and general fitness, but I have a lot of room to improve (5'11" 165lb and I had trouble squatting 235x5 the other day). So my question is: how much will protein powder and/or creatine benefit me versus trying to do more work like additional or different exercises? Is it worth it if I'm already in my mid 30s? I have always just tried to eat enough protein by choosing my foods carefully and never felt compelled to buy the powder (or creatine for that matter) but I was thinking about giving it a try. What says the H&FB?

I've seen solid gains with and without protein powder.

Recently I started buying it again because when tracking my macros I realized I wasn't getting nearly enough protein in my diet.

I use protein powder after everyworkout. But all it is, is an easy way to hit your protein macros. If you are getting enough protein in your diet, the powder means nothing.

At 165 pounds and those lifting numbers you don't need to worry about protein powder. You need to be eating atleast a lbs of beef a day and a dozen eggs, minimum on top of other meals.

Protein powder is nothing but a convenience, a easy to drink replacement for eating meat. Some people who eat very large amounts of protein need the powder as it gets really hard to continue to eat that much, but honestly at yourweight, you have no excuses.

And stop program hopping. And you still have tons of room to grow from a linear progression program like greyskull lp. But if you want to stick to more advanced programming then run madcow for 12 weeks then 531 boring but big challenge for 12 weeks.

If you need help with the diet lmk and I will put something together for you tdlsu777 at google

Do you have kidney issues already? If not why would you be afraid of the most researched supplement in the history of the planet that shows absolutely zero damage to any internal organ?

Then you should not take it for sure. Also keep your protein relatively moderate, no more than 1g per lbs of bodyweight and make sure you are drinking a min of a gallon of water a day, up to 2 gallons of you can.

Didn't know you had that condition. Sorry to hear that and hope it gets better for you.

Why be sorry I've had it my whole life I know no different. Which is why I'm extra careful on things I do, put in body, and always ask so many dumb questions.

Like others have said, protein powder is only necessary if you don't eat enough protein. For me I use it to hit my protein goals on a cut.

I like creatine. It works. It does make you appear larger and improves lifts. But for me it gives me issues with going to the restroom. So I had to stop using it. But if it works for you then I would definetly take it.

I started taking a protein powder with creatin in it. I didn't realize it until after I purchased 15lbs of it. I started taking it and in 6 weeks I increased my back squat by 30 lbs and my squat clean by 35 lbs.

I took creatine for the 1st time in my mid 30s. For the past few winters, I've gone about 3-4 months taking it at the lower range of suggested dose and then I stop from about Apr-Nov. I'm also roughly your size (6' 170) and gain about 3-5 lbs while on it.

I've felt some improvement with heavier lifts and suggest trying it out for a few months since it's so cheap and seems to be universally recommended (although I'm not an expert). I think I'll probably continue doing it every winter.

I love to eat and especially proteins so I've never tried protein powder.
