Final Fantasy X for me.

Being able to switch out party characters mid-battle and no ATB was a lot of fun in battles. Kind of fizzled out once you got to late game and could max out any character for any stat. That said, having Lulu do 99,999 damage and overkilling fiends with her basic attack was fun to do.

Plus, it was the first Final Fantasy the I remember where damage was based on stats and not almost entirely reliant on gear. Gear customization was cool as well, though it did require some farming.

Original FF Tactics or FF Tactics War of the Lions remake is #2 for me.

4 is getting a lot of love so far. I might bump this up in order as well.

1-5 all have their merits (only kinda with 2) but 4 is imo the one that birthed all of the rest of the golden age of the series. Showed that the game could have the good gameplay but also really the great characters and plot. In many ways 4 set up 6, which ultimately set up 7-10

Not going all the way to breaking through everyone's damage limit has always driven me crazy. This might make me get back into it. That and making a god tier blitzball team.

Honestly only ever played the SNES/Super Famicom ones. Loved them all.

FF 9 - This was probably my favorite world but the gameplay was a bit slow, characters were kind of weak (outside of Vivi and Steiner) and the story was a little more convoluted than I would have liked

Easily my favorite. The character development is the best of any in the series. Outside of the random last boss the story is not that convoluted imo.

Zidane, Dagger, Steiner, and Vivi all have great character arcs.
The other 4 additional characters are lacking in that but that is true of nearly every FF when it comes to the minor party members. Especially the older FFs with large cast.

This is my list. (not including the MMOs)

9
Tactics
6
7, 10
4, 12
8

All of these games listed are must plays imo if you like the genre.
The others are skippable. And 15 is just awful.
Still playing through 16.

I always forget about Tactics, I need to find a way to play it. I've only ever played 1 tactical RPG (Shining Force) but I loved it

9 - My favorite game of all-time. It's a perfect game in my eyes and if they screw up the remake I will riot.

6 - Not much more to say about this than what others have said. Just an incredible game, story, and characters all around. Best villain in the series.

8 - The first FF game that I owned. I've never understood the hate for the junction, or draw, system since after the first few hours you can just create whatever magic you want without having to ever draw. The leveling system sucked though and this is the most ripe for a remake.

4 - The start of the golden age of FF

7 - The most overrated game in my opinion. It's an amazing game but I have never understood the idea of it being the best of the series.

10 - Another amazing game. Blitzball dropped it down my rankings

5 - Great job system and characters. Not as memorable of a story.

16 - Story is great the gameplay is great but it's very barebones and basic. No real gear or stats. I hate no party and it not being turn based.

10-2 - Surprisingly good gameplay but unnecessary

15 - As others have said an incredible story but told in an idiotic way and bad pacing.

12 - Could never get into it. I've tried multiple times and I just don't like the gambit system. The audio also sounds like it was recorded through a tin can.

2 - The red headed stepchild of the series but I enjoyed the risks it took and the way it tried to innovate

3 - Eh, it had to go somwhere not much to say here

1 - Not surprising it's my least favorite as it is the first.

11 and 14 - never played

As of yesterday, I’ve played through and beat them all. I’d say...

FF6: Still my all time favorite. The story and characters are top notch, and the main villain is still the best the series has ever produced.

FF9: Combined the best of the old school NES FF games with the PS era with a great story, interesting world, and has the best character in the entire series (Vivi)

FF7: When it came out, there was absolutely nothing like it. There’s a reason 7 is the most popular and Remake was equally amazing.

FF16: Maybe it’s because I just finished it, but 16’s story and characters are fantastic. Really dug the world it was set in as well. I also loved how they made the classic summons front and center in the story.

FF4: This was the first one that hooked me. It was the first video game I can remember playing that had no problem killing off it’s characters (even through a lot of them come back).

FF8: It was so different from 7 that some people were turned off by it, but I love 8’s futuristic setting and story.

FF10: The story is so good that Tales of Symphonia straight ripped it off for the first half of their game

FF15: Interesting concept, but they released this game half finished. Royal Edition fixed a lot of the story issues this one had a launch, but playing through this at launch was a chore.

FF12: I enjoyed the story, but the combat wasn’t that great imo. Plus Vaan is arguably the worst “main character” in the series

FF5: Job system is awesome. The story is silly and kind of a mess (A fricking tree? Really?), but it does introduce one of the series biggest recurring characters in Gilgamesh.

FF1: The OG FF is pretty straightforward, but still a great old school, turn based RPG

FF3: The job system at the time was revolutionary, but it’s done way better in FF5.

FF13: Interesting setting, but I flat out hated almost every character. Also the combat system sucks arse.

FF2: The leveling system in this game is an absolute grind fest.

The best versions of 4 are GBA and PSP/Vita (which also includes the After Years which is underrated)

The DS version is good but i think it should be experienced in 2D first.

I kinda love this game too much - I got the GBA version in the 5th grade

well, I admittedly have never touched a Final Fantasy game until 2 days ago when I took the plunge and bought XVI. I'm through the prologue stuff and have ventured out into the woods with Cid, but I am already hooked (when I can find the time to play). Love the fast paced nature of the combat.

Because of XVI, I decided to also get the VII remake, which I jumped into last night just to check it out and based on videos I watched of the original VII, I love how they moved away from turn-based combat and the game looks fantastic. I got to the slum apartment and stopped because I think I'll proceed with XVI in its entirety first rather than play both simultaneously. Can't wait to dive into this one though....both games so far are fantastic visually and from a gameplay and story perspective.

Now I am down the rabbit hole of figuring out how to play the others at some point. Aftrer some quick research it appears that I can get the pixel remastered version of I-VI (likely do this on the Switch so I can play on the go) for $75, and I can get remasters or originals of every other game on the PS store for free through PS Plus with the exception of XIII. With XI and XIV being MMORPGs I don't think I'll ever play but who knows. I hate that I didn't get into this franchise before but it's exciting that I have a huge backlog of stuff to play, similarly to how BOTW was my first Zelda and I've played a number of the older ones, and how Demon's Souls Remake/Elden Ring were my first FromSoft games leading me to play most of the others.

I did this for the PS4 HD release, 100%'d the entire game. One of the most tedious things I've ever done

Im working on doing exactly that. I’m 260 hours in and still haven’t finished the sphere grid but it’s getting close. Pretty much everything else is done except for the chocobo race at Remium Temple. That’s a great game.

VII is my favorite as it was my introduction into the series. That was such a leap forward in gaming for me. I still have my PS copy of the game lol. Love it love it love it.

7 - for the epicenes of scope going into a next gen of consoles / nostalgia, etc
9 - charm and story
8 - Zell Dincht GOAT
10 - sort of like FF7 in terms of going next gen, great story
7 (remake) - hits a lot of the feels of the original
12 - I'm Captain Basch!
13-15 - Don't remember much of anything about 13 and the sequel, never finished 15

Not yet rated - 16 - I've just started playing and can't stop laughing at all the GOT themes in it

Haven't played any of the 8 or 16-bit games in so long I don't think I can rate them, but they are obviously great for what they are.

1. 7 (I know it's not the best but it was my first)
2. 6
3. 9
4. 4

It's hard to rank the others. I loved the combat in 10 but disliked the characters, story, voice acting, etc. 5 has the stupid job system and a lackluster story. I got too hyped for 8 and never even finished it.

This one.

I still play through it every few years. The monster arena side quest is massive.

I have yet to get Lulu's special weapon though.

Those rankings are a joke and reek of "get off my lawn"

Putting X-2 at 6 is the biggest joke of all. That game was complete garbage.

1. Tactics
2. X
3. 7
4. 6
5. XIV
6. 4
7. 12
8. 9
9. 8 (story is better then 9. Hate stealing magic.) Story is S tier though.
10. 13

I haven't played 16. I have heard great things. Yoshi P made it, it's probably good. The rest of the titles were not entertaining to me. The job system in 5 was a good idea but poorly executed.

Tactics had an amazing story but Tactics Ogre is a better game to me personally.
