well, I admittedly have never touched a Final Fantasy game until 2 days ago

This is a fun journey for you. I will say the downside of going in your direction might be the slow pace of combat in the earlier games. PS era games loved dramatically long intros. Narratives didn't start getting good (to me at least) until Final Fantasy 6.

Im working on doing exactly that. I’m 260 hours in and still haven’t finished the sphere grid but it’s getting close.

It's the Lulu weapon that kept me from 100% for years. Damn lightning dodges. That and the damn Chocobo races in the Calm Lands. Getting under 0:00 for the first time for the Sun Sigil is probably one of my most vivid gaming memories.

For the sphere grid, it's easy to break it with the right weapons (Overdrive to AP).

Those rankings are a joke and reek of "get off my lawn"

Putting X-2 at 6 is the biggest joke of all. That game was complete garbage.

Sorry I like different games than you? it's an opinion, relax

The only way I was able to hit the 200 dodges was to find a specific spot that I would run back to after a dodge. I’d have another 1/2 second to anticipate the next strike. That was what kept myself focused and not get caught up in trying to anticipate the next strike just standing about. I beat Penance just messing around using Yojimbo. I had close to 10,000,000 Gil and paid him all of it. Zanmato happened and it was over. The biggest challenge I had that I gave up on was trying to beat the Dark Magus Sisters all together. That was just brutal. Splitting them up made it a cakewalk.

IV was my first story driven RPG. It will always be the GOAT to me for that reason alone.

However, VI is probably the best of the series looking at things objectively.

SNES Square’s lineup was legendary.

I thoroughly enjoyed VII and VIII as a teenager. Missed IX during its initial release window and I’ve never beaten it.

My last truly incredible FF experience was X. Never played XII and XIII was pretty meh.

XV set aside half its plotline for fricking dlc and it suffered as a result.

I’m enjoying XVI so far but I haven’t played too far into it yet

First FF title I played was (FFIV) FFII SNES. It hooked me on the series.

Played 5 but didn't like it as much as 4.

6 was really good but I don't revere it as much as many FF fans do.

Life was weird at the time so I skipped 7 and didn't start gaming again until I got a PlayStation and played 8, which became my favorite of all time, even today. Then I went back and played 7 but didn't like it as much as 8.

Unpopular opinion here, but I just didn't care for 9. I played and beat it but I think the return to the more cartooney graphics style turned me off. Plus, I think I was a bit flustered just trying to run through it without a strategy guide, and doing everything I knew to do to get to Ozma thinking I had a chance and- nope. Getting my arse so embarrassingly handed to me, only made me just want to hurry up and finish the game, which I did and never played it again.

X, I absolutely loved and it's still near the top. X-2 brought a nice end to what was left open at the end of X, but it wasn't as fun with endgame content.

I didn't play 11 and I tried to play 12 but it just never clicked with me. Skipped the 13 titles and don't do MMOs so 14 was out.

Absolutely loved 15, particularly after the Insomnia streets dungeon area/Omega fight was patched in. The story was weak in many areas but the "bros on a road trip" feel combined with the Western influence and fun combat still put it high on my list. The massive world (though it could oddly feel "empty") is beautiful and fun to just wander or drive around in.

VIIR is stellar in every way, and I say that because I'm not a FF7 purist. I can't bring myself to include it in my "favorites" though until all 3 games are complete.

I'm not quite done with XVI yet but I love it so far, in spite of its deviations from what we expect of a FF title. The story is top notch and the combat is different and fun.

If I had to list though, I'd just do a top 3 since all my favorite titles are so different from one another, and it would be:

3). FFXV. Open world, exploration, graphics and combat are memorable. Chilling at camp with the guys and chocobos before a morning of fishing for Cherrycomb Salmon? Priceless.

2). FFX. Story is memorable, although the delivery was corny at times. Endgame content with Monster Arena and Penance quest is as challenging as anything in mainline FF history. The tension between Tidus and Jecht is palpable, tragic and sadly relatable on a personal level.

1). FF8. Game latched onto me and never let go. Loved the cast, especially Rinoa and Zell. Loved the background/side stories with Laguna. Main story was strange but complete, and the GF/junction system was sick. "Endgame" content culminating with Omega Weapon was extreme. My fondest memories ever in a FF title, and it's nostalgia for the win.

1. FFXV: it’s a flawed game, but i just love spending time in this world. I actually enjoy riding around in the car with the bros. I also find combat really fun, but wish there was some enemy upscaling or a hard mode for this game.

2. FFVII Remake Part 1: this is the perfect reboot of a beloved franchise. The combat system is deep and nostalgic yet modern and well-paced. Most of the side quests are fun, too, and help to further develop the world. I just wish there was a little more exploration in this world.

3. Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced: this classic turned based strategy entry has always had a special place in my heart. Battle is as much a puzzle as anything else, and a rewarding one.

I didn't know we were including Tactics in this list, but it is one of my favorite games ever. I really wish they'd boot this back up and bring it into the modern age...

My son and I beat FF16 and the FF7 Remake back-to-back a couple weeks ago, and in my opinion FF7R is light years better than 16 (even though it came out like 2 years earlier) as a "proper" FF game. The original FF7 was like magic to me when it first came out, and the remake upgraded everything to make it actually match what I probably was envisioning in my head when I first played the original...
